The Andalucia region
Much is been written about Andalucía and its identity as the 'real' Spain of community traditions, fiestas, history, varied landscapes and exciting food and drink. It is only when you experience the Subbetica at the heart of Andalucía do you perhaps begin to realise how beautiful and distinctively different it is from other parts of Spain and the rest of Europe.
The Subbetica is Andalucía's unspoilt heartland. Its eleven historic villages and towns tell rich and fascinating stories. From the Baroque Palaces of Priego, the Roman remains of Almedinalla or the prehistoric caves of Zuheros all in their very own way go to make the Subbetica an unrivalled destination. At its centre is a national park with grand landscapes, huge sky's, mountains, canyons and wooded valleys all perfect for walking, bird watching, biking or hiking.
Casa Fuente Moyana is within easy reach of some of Spain's most historic cities including Cordoba, Granada and Seville. The house is within an hour of the coast at the city of Malaga which acts as a gateway to the Costa Del Sol. 3 hours away is the historic Rock of Gibraltar and the large port of Algeciras from where you can catch a ferry to Tangiers in Morocco.
Casa Fuente Moyana is in the small village of Cruz Algaida set on the edge of the Subbetica, one of Spain's most ancient and unspoiled areas. A ten minute drive takes you to the largest nearby settlement of Iznajar. The village is built on an imposing rock topped by a Muslim castle and a 16th century church and overlooking the Embalse de Iznajar
The embalse is being developed as a recreational area and is a favourite with locals and visitors alike. In the spring and summer the beaches are popular as are the beach side bars and restaurants. In the autumn and winter the embalse becomes a location for fisherman.
If you fancy a round of golf, or simply need to work on your swing then, Antequerra Golf is only a 40 minute drive away. Antequerra Golf not only offers 18 impressive holes, but also some of the best sights overlooking the historic town of Antequerra. It is a 6000 metre-long par 72 golf course, and all of its fairways have been carefully designed by double-Ryder Cup winner José María Cañizares.
Just over 90 minutes away is Europe's southern most ski resort – Sol y Nieve. It surprises many guests that in the spring you can enjoy the house's swimming pool in the morning and then enjoy the last of the winter snow high up in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
In summer you can go walking, cycling, horse-riding and mountain climbing in the area. One of the cable cars and one chair-lift are kept open in July and August, making it relatively easy for hikers to reach the summit of Veleta (3,394 metres). On a clear day, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Africa from the peak of the mountain.

"A little corner of heaven in Southern Spain"
This house is absolutely beautiful in every way. It is in a quiet, rural location with spectacular surroundings and amazing views (particularly from the top terrace). It is designed and finished to a really high standard with real attention to detail.
We were a party of 5 - me and my husband, our 2 toddlers and my mother in law - and there was plenty of space and something for everyone. The kids enjoyed playing in the pool and watching the provided children's DVDs, my husband spent hours reading on the terrace and lounging by the pool, my mother in law went for a run every day and raved about the views of the lake and I loved the pool during the day and relaxing on the gorgeous top terrace as the sun went down.
We had breakfast on the middle terrace under the grape vine every morning and during the day if it was too hot to eat outdoors the dining area indoors was cool enough. We were there in August so never got to use the wood burner but I imagine that will be a real treat for winter guests.
There is a nearby supermarket (a car journey away) which has a great fresh fish counter and everything else we needed was also available there. I think car rental is a necessity but the journey from malaga airport is no problem at just over an hour.
The owners are really friendly and nothing is too much trouble. In particular we really appreciated the home grown vegetables that they dropped in for us. Other highlights include the cosy reading corner, the interior decor, the gorgeous pool, and the amazing top terrace!
We truly enjoyed staying here and I would not hesitate to recommend it.
