In Harford, a cottage converted from an old coach house attached to a big, Grade II listed Victorian former rectory. Impressively approached along a beech-lined, hardcore drive, the cottage is to one side of the friendly owners' home, with its own enclosed courtyard (table/chairs, gas barbecue) in front. There are 40 acres of sheep-grazed meadows (lots of bluebells) and woods full of wildlife for you to explore, and really excellent walks, including footpaths leading directly to the moor. South Hams beaches (Mothecombe), 25 minute drive.

Inside, smart, stylish and comfortable with oak floors (rugs) in most rooms. From sunny courtyard, door to big hall (for coats/boots and drying dogs) with cupboard housing washing machine and small freezer; living room looking to courtyard with woodburner, TV/DVD, leather sofas; smart fitted kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, microwave, larder fridge) with granite worktops, butler sink, oak floor and big, glazed double doors to courtyard. From hall, stairs (stairgate) up to two bedrooms – a double (5' bed) plus child's 2'3" folding bed, and a twin; bathroom (suite plus bath-shower) with tiled floor. Spring water. A good retreat.

The West Country region

Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you're at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.

The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field 'oases'. The moor's eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) – two of them rise in the moor's middle and join at Dartmeet – is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor's most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.

Ivybridge

Harford: hamlet (ancient church, cottages, scattered farms) on the southern tip of Dartmoor National Park in the sheltered river Erme valley. Stone circles and cairns at nearby Butterdon Hill and close to Two Moors Way. Shops at Ivybridge, 2 miles. Sandy beach at Mothecombe, 10 miles.
