The Lassithi Prefecture region
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, situated in the south of the Mediterranean Sea, enjoying a wonderful climate.. It is still considered to be very traditional in its ways and has its own style of music and dance and also a different dialect from the rest of Greece.
The coastline offers many beaches, breathtaking views, wonderful flowers and plants and stunning mountain sides. There are many pretty villages to visit and a choice of archaeological sites dating back from the Minoan period. The island has many visitors who enjoy selected walks and if you enjoying climbing then hiking is also avaiIable.
Wherever you go on the island there are many tavernas and restaurants offering traditional foods prepared with local produce and flavoured with the herbs of the island. Crete also produces many of its own wines, brandy and of course raki!
We are situated in Istron which boasts three bays, the beaches there vary from stony, sand and stone to sand. The old villages of Kalo Chorio and Pyrgos are nearby and make a pleasant walk if you like to have a peek into an unspoilt local way of life. The backdrop to all of this is the mountains, covered in olive, lemon and orange trees. On the way to the beach you will pass the olive groves which also grow figs, pomegranites and vegetables.
In the local area you will find supermarkets, bakery, pharmacy, bars and tavernas. There is a bus service to the nearby towns of Aghios Nikolaos and Ierapetra, taxis are also available.
The town of Aghios Nikolaos is a 15 minute journey away and offers everything from the traditional to modern and still retaining its character which has made it so popular for many years.
Elounda with its luxury hotels and villas is worth a visit if only for the views along the coast as you make your way to Plaka, from here you can take a boat for a 10 minute journeyto the island of Spinalonga, if you prefer a longer boat trip then you can take one from Aghios Nikolaos.
Ierapetra is situated on the west coast is a 20 minute drive, here you have the Libyan Sea and the coast has black sands. A market is held here every Saturday, and there is also one in Aghios Nikolaos on a Wednesday.
A visit to th plateau of Lassithi is a must for truly spectacular scenery and views which takes you through the most delightful Cretan villages.
