The Marmara Sea region
Istanbul Province (Turkish: ?stanbul ili) is a province located in north-west Turkey.
It has an area of 5,343.02 km² and a population of 13,854,740.
The population was 10,018,735 in 2000.
It is surrounded by the provinces of Tekirda? to the west, Kocaeli to the east, the Black Sea to the northern part and the Sea of Marmara to the south.
The Bosphorus (Bo?aziçi) Strait divides the province in two parts: the European side and the Asian side.
Roughly 3.85 million people live on the Asian side in 2010 census, and 9.4 million on the European side.
The capital of the province is the city of Istanbul, which, since 2004, has the same boundaries as the province.
The province also includes the Princes' Islands constituted as Adalar District (Island District).
Çengelköy is a neighborhood in the Üsküdar district on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, in Istanbul, Turkey, between the neighborhoods of Beylerbeyi and Kuleli.
It is mainly a residential district. Many mansions were built there in the Ottoman period.
From the 6th century, the port of Çengelköy was called Sophianai because of the palace Justin II built nearby for his consort Sophia.
The name Çengelköy means "hook village", and indeed the village is nestled around a sharp turn of the Bosphorus shore, but the origin of the name is uncertain.
One story put forward is that the village is named after the 19th-century Ottoman admiral Çengelo?lu Tahir Pasha, who had a waterside mansion built there (and there is a Çengelo?lu Street in Çengelköy).
Another story derives the name from the Persian word çenkar, "crab," because of the abundance of seafood in the Bosphorus there. A 16th-century Ottoman document apparently refers to the place as "Çenger köyü."
Çengelköy is world-famous for the small cucumbers once grown there
