The Limousin / Auvergne / Puy-de-Dome region
The Auvergne is largely unspoiled by mass tourism and boasts a wealth of small villages. It is the least populated region of France and is still very rural with agriculture being its main industry. The views are spectacular with mountains and forests in abundance. The wildlife is varied and if you get up early enough you'll spot deer in the fields at the rear of the property. Eating out is still relatively inexpensive and the local specialism of Truffade is delicious. The Ski resort of Super Besse is just an hours drive away and beautiful at any time of year.
Canoeing on the river Allier is just a short distance. There is a lovely swimming lake at Le Vernet La varenne, just a short drive away, always a hit with the children, or why not hire mountain bikes, the plentiful tracks are beautifully maintained!
We are at an altitude of 670 metres, so the air is very clear and we normally have a cooling breeze in the height of the summer months and the night sky is quite amazing with no light pollution.
The Issoire area
There is a weekly market in Ambert and Issoire and a small market in Sauxillanges. There are fetes and brocantes in many of the surrounding villages every week throughout the summer, and the ''fete de musique'' on midsummer night is always popular.
The Auvergne is well known for its local cheeses including Bleu D'Auvergne St. Nectaire and Forme D'ambert.
The Puy De Dome is a must with its new railway to the top finnished for summer 2012 or why not take the cable car to the top of Le Mont Dore, on a clear day you can see Mont Blanc in the distance.
Clermont Ferrand is our closest large city, with its lovely ''black Cathedral'' and of course its rugby team ''Clermont Auvergne''
