Villa Monziani is a 17th C Villa, one of the oldest houses on San Giulio Island, lakeside, at water level, with full view of the lake, On the ground floor there is the garden, which stretches the length of the house (1/3 in the shade of the bower and 2/3 in the sun), the kitchen and a small lounge, which both open onto the garden, and a bathroom. The boathouse is adjacent to the garden. On the first floor there is a very large lounge with a fireplace and a master bedroom. The balcony on the first floor runs the length of the house and an outdoor stone staircase leads to the garden below. On the mezzanine there is the 2nd bedroom with twin beds and an en-suite bathroom. On the second floor there is the 3rd bedroom with en-suite bathroom and a small lounge area. Also on the second floor there is the 4th bedroom, a studio with a divan bed and a spectacular view of the lake. The house has been completely refurbished and modernised bearing in mind its past history, respecting its original plan. The ceilings are all original and designer furniture and illumination enhances the traditional settings, giving a sense of discrete luxury and homeliness. The garden is manicured and from the garden wall you can dive into the water, whose cleanliness is certified, or enter walking through the boat house.
A very magical atmosphere surrounds this island. The green hills of the pre-alpine lake and the small villages dotted on its shore give a feeling of tranquility. Orta's very attractive 18th century houses, make a colourful backdrop to its square, which is like a parlour with cafés, benches under shady trees, arches hiding shops and the full view of the fascinating island of San Giulio. A stunning view of the lake, of the town of Pella and of the Madonna del Sasso Church can be had from the Sacro Monte Franciscan Church above Orta. It is fascinating to stroll in Orta's narrow, cobbled streets and admire the Baroque houses that line them.To reach the island (a mere 400m) guests can use our boat, with or without engine, or the public taxi boats. They can park in our garage on the mainland. We meet our guests in Orta, show them the location of the garage, take them across to the island in our boat, show them the house, answer their questions and leave. We return the day of their departure.
Prices for the property are per week, for 1 bedroom (2 people). They include motorboat and mainland garage. Extra: cleaning charges of 50.00 Euro. No rent for less that a week (7 nights). Eventual extra nights have a 5% discount. The house has 3 other bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Prices for 2 bedrooms (4 people) or 3 bedrooms (6 people) or 4 bedrooms (8 people) will be given on request. In the Summer months (June to September) minimum 2 bedroom rent. We do not rent rooms separately. Please inquire.
A small apartment on the top floor belongs to my cousins. They are completely independent. They use the back entrance to the house and the central staircase to get to their flat. As for us, the house is their second home, so they might be or might not be there. They are very nice people to get on with and do not intrude.

In the manicured garden there are palm trees, a fig tree, a vine over the bower, an oleander and other small plants, which together with many flowers make it colourful and restful. The garden has two stone tables, one in the shade and one in the sun. There are garden chairs and long chairs. Cushions and table cloths are provided and a portable BBQ. Our cousins, if present can share one third of the garden. The view stretches from the shore and the hills in front to the pre-Alps in the North and to the South of the lake. The Mottarone mountain where one can ski can be seen from the house.
A large boat does the tour of the lake, stopping at small villages. An ideal way of spending a day on the lake. The lake is 14 km long and 2.5 km wide. You can tour with the boat provided and organise a picnic. The distance between Orta and the island is 400 meters. A sandy beach with amenities can be found at the southern end of the lake at Gozzano, but several beaches as well as picnic areas are dotted around the shore.
The water is very clean and one can swim, windsurf, sail, row, water-ski and fish. Golf course and horse riding can also be done in the vicinity. One enter the water via the boat house or the garden steps. Our boat is docked in our private boat house (there is a winch to help pull it out of the water) and when at mainland Orta either at the landing slope in front of Bar Venus or the the public piers on the right.
The house has a second entrance at the back, giving access to the circular path that circles the island. There are no cars on the island!
We meet our guests at Orta in the main square where there are the docks, after unloading you are shown the nearby garage. We take you to the island, either by pubic transport (9am till 7pm) of with our Canadian aluminium boat (8HP outboard engine), show you around and then leave. We will meet again at Orta on your departure. Please contact us if you need extra details or information. Thank you.
The Piedmont region
North West Italy is renown as the lake region, apart from Lake Orta there is also Lake Maggiore with its 3 beautiful islands, Lake Varese, Lake Lugano and Lake Como. The arch of the pre-Alps and the massif of Monte Rosa are the backstage of this region.
Short excursions around Orta:
Walk to the Sacro Monte for a good view of the lake. Start from the square, take via Motta, flanked by 18th century buildings, and follow the path by the main church that winds to the top of the hill. There is a restaurant/bar up there. There is also a viable road that accesses the splendid location.
Walk the circular path that skirts the peninsula alongside the lake. Start from the Square and walk left through the main street of Orta skirting the lake along a very picturesque walkway. The path leads you back to the main road and leaving Hotel Villa Crespi on the left you can descend again back to the main square.
Drive to the to the Church Madonna del Sasso via Gozzano and Alzo for a different view of the lake. Return to Alzo, turn left and continue to visit Quarna Sotto and then drive to Omega and back to Orta, basically circling the lake.
Drive to the Mottarone mountain (4,891) ft. on a clear day. Extensive view over lakes Maggiore, Varese, Orta , the Alps and Monte Rosa.
One day excursions:
Drive via Omegna to Stresa and visit the 3 islands. Drive North to Verbania, Cannero e Cannobbio and return home via Omegna.
In Stresa you an get the lift to Mottarone and back.
Drive to Como and after having visited its centre, drive along the left shore of the Lake to Cadenabbia and take the boat to Bellagio. Cross back to Cadenabbia and return to Orta.
Drive to Omegna, Gravellona Toce, Ornavasso, Piedimulera. Macugnaga e Pecetto. Walk around, it's beautiful, Take either lift to the base of the Glacier of Monte Rosa or to the opposite Monte Moro and walk to Rifugio Oberto where there is a further away but larger view of the glacier in its magnificence
Two books in English at the house on the island which will be of great help. We will talk about the excursions, the shopping and so on when we meet you.
Isola San Giulio
The town of Orta, on the lake shore in front of the island, with its 18th century houses is like a parlour with cafés. There are benches under the shady trees, arches hiding shops and a full view of the fascinating island of San Giulio. To reach it (a mere 400 metres) guests can use our boat, with or without engine, using oars, or the public transport boats (9am till 7pm).
There is a market in Orta square every Wednesday. An English poetry festival takes place in Orta in September and a festival of classical music in June and September on the island at Villa Tallone. Fireworks in August are famous in Omegna, at northern end of the lake.
There are no shops on the island, just a restaurant/bar and a souvenir shop, but Orta offers a large variety of food shops, restaurants of all levels, clothes and antique jewellery shops. Supermarkets can be found in Gozzano, a 15 minute drive.

"One of a kind vacation"
Orta, and this house are truly one of a kind. Our immediate family stayed for a week during the spring of 2013 and it was an unforgettable experience. The house is spacious with spectacular views t… More
Thank you very much, we strive to modernise within our possibilities as much as possible, guarantying as much personal comfort as possible, renovating the linen and bedding, adding extra luxuries such as bedwarmers for the colder months and heaters for the toilets all year round, and decorating with designer objects, such as the illumination pieces, as after all we are in a country famous for its design! Thanks also to many of our guests we now find the kitchen furnished with a most varied set of utensils, so complete that a few we are not 100% certain of their use, to help make your home cooking as pleasurable and convenient as possible.

"Fantastic house for large groups in a beautiful location!"
The Villa is located on an island in Lake Orta. It is quite, peaceful, and set in one of the most beautiful places you will ever visit. The Villa has so much character and is right across the water fr… More
Thank you so much, not only is it a perfect place to relax after a wedding, it's now becoming a popular location for weddings, especially among foreigners, ever more often do you see couples in the main square having their photograph taken with the island as the backdrop or being rowed around the island in one of the characteristic wooden row boats. It certainly adds a fairy-tale mystique that is completed by the singing of the nuns, who live in the monastery on centre of the island, on Sunday mornings at mass in the ancient basilica, an experience open to all and not to be missed.

"Magical Island in Northern Italy"
I have stayed at this Villa a few times and each and every time is just as magical as the first! The house is so charming and afternoons spent reading in the garden or fishing or just having a glass o… More
Thank you very much. We're so glad you appreciate the amenities that Orta now offers, over the years the quantity, quality and range of shops has improved enormously, after all the region is famous for its gastronomic specialities and improved catering is symptomatic of progress. Apart from the plethora of all types of wine bars, ice-cream shops, restaurants (in particular Venus), fashion, art, jewellery, and all the related events organised by the borough, we have now even a famous Italian TV chef, Antonino Cannavacciuolo at nearby Villa Crespi, near the Orta roundabout. He's the equivalent of Gordon Ramsey, without the swearing!

"Heaven on earth!"
I'm almost afraid to write a review as I don't want it to be booked when we want to return! The sun shimmering off the lake in the morning, sitting in the garden drinking my lavazza coffee … More
Thank you so much. We are so pleased that the boys enjoyed the lake, it is a vaunt that the water is so clean now, after the definitive depuration interventions in the 80s. There are lots of fish, so much so that on Sundays many try their luck trying to catch the renown perches and pikes. Some have also put traps for freshwater prawns, which evidences the cleanliness of the water. Apart from all the birds which we love to feed too, often the swans will pass by when the lake is quiet and that's our favourite moment. We make sure that we'll always got biscuits for them!

"Another Magical stay at Lake Orta"
I have stayed at Barrow residence on Isola San Giulio for 16 years. I have taken family and friends at many different times of the year and we always feel like crying the day we leave. It is a private… More
It's always a great pleasure to have you, the house has become your home too over the years and we treasure the useful objects you've left behind to help enhance the facilities. We have always made jam from the grapes and the figs from the garden, but now thanks to you we have a new specialty with which greet future guests, San Giulio chutney! We are increasing the species of spice plants that can be found in the garden; rosemary, sage, oregano, majorana, mint, basil and chives, to enrich the culinary experience as much as possible. We'll be planting a banana tree, not that we ever expect fruits, but to use the leaves in the future to cook fish on the new BBQ grill, obviously made in USA! ;)
