The Sardinia region

Sardinia is a region in the centre of Italy. The capital is Cagliari.

Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily). The island is surrounded (clockwise from north) by the French island of Corsica, the Italian Peninsula, Tunisia and the Spanish Balearic Islands.
All islands have a peculiar fascination, and Sardinia is no exception.

Lying a little less than 200km from the Italian mainland and at same distance from the Tunisian coast, it is in the words of D.H. Lawrence, “lost between Europe and Africa and belonging to nowhere”. With its own language and distinct customs, the island boasts a fiercely independent character while remaining unmistakably and exuberantly Italian. There is nothing particularly homogeneous about the island, however.

As the Mediterranee’s second biggest island after Sicily with only 1.6 million people and one of the lowest population density among Italian regions, Sardinia encompasses a range of diverse faces, from the stereotyped yachting elite of the fabled Costa Smeralda to the simple shepherd’s society of the mountainous interior. Neither image of course represents more than a tiny fraction of the true picture.

There are glorious beaches and rocky groves on every coast, and also dramatic cliffs and numerous lagoons which accounts for a rich diversity of wildlife, as do the forested mountains and the wild macchia that carpets the interior.

Isola Rossa / Cala Rossa, Sardinia area

Sardinia’s Northwest coast shelters two of the most attractive seaside resort on the island interspersed with some really spectacular coastline. The principal resort of this strip; Alghero, has become an important tourist resort without losing its distinctive Catalan character – the result of the intense Spanish colonization in the 14th century. Surprisingly enough, given this faintly exotic touch, it is also the most “Italian” of Sardinia’s holiday towns, its old centre a tight web of narrow lanes jammed with boutiques, bars and restaurants.

South of Alghero, the rocky coast remains unspoiled by development, and is consequently one of the last habitats in Sardinia of the griffin vulture. At the end of this stretch, the riverside port of Bosa is still waiting to be discovered by the big package companies. While not exactly tourist-free, the town has quiet, undemanding atmosphere perfectly in tune with the slow rhythms of the local fishing community. Bosa’s centre is a compact medieval warren of streets overlooked by the ruined Malaspina castle.

Your tour will continue in the Sinis peninsula, a wet area whose lagoons have attracted some of Sardinia’s most abundant bird life and are also the place to see the flat-bottomed fassonis, boats still used by the lagoon’s fishermen and hunters, or just for local races. The peninsula’s western coast provides same of the most alluring beaches: Mari Ermi and Is Arutas. At Sinis’ southernmost tip lies of one the best preserved classical sites on the island, Tharros, once an important Punic trading base and a Roman settlement.

From the flatlands of Nurra, whose landscape is alive with rich vegetation and a coast full of captivating colours, the territories of North-western Sardinia offer their numerous specificities, among which those connected to craftsmanship: from the baskets of Anglona, that find their rightful place of maximum expression in the weaving museum of Castelsardo, from the vermentino wines of Meilogu to the oils of the Sassarese and the embroideries of Villanova.

Moreover, it is slice of Sardinia characterised by extremely evocative archaeological finds, such as the Tempio di Monte d’Accoddi in Sassari or the Nuraghe Santo Antine in Torralba and spectacular historical-artistic testimonies, like the Holy Trinity of Saccargia in Codrongianos or the Retablo Maggiore di Ardara.
