The North Egypt / Cairo / North Sinai region
Egypt has a fascinating history and there are many archaeological sites to visit and be amazed by. As one of the oldest civilisations in the world, the Egyptian culture is complex and rich. During World War II, Ismalia was a base for the British, French and Italian armies. Therefore, there are historic sites in Ismalia that can be visited especially by the old veterans.
The weather is hot and dry in Summer and there is plenty of sunshine to enjoy. The region around Ismalia is very well known for being very green and the Suez Canal.
Ismalia / Suez Canal area
Ismalia is not the place to party, but one hour's drive from Ismalia is Cairo and further up is Alexandria. Lots of local shops and restaurants to spend your time in. The speciality dish of Ismalia is grilled seafood delivered to your doorstep free of charge (e.g. seabream, seabass, grey mullet, prawns and salad all for £20 based on 4 people sharing).
In Cairo of course you will find the great Pyramids and the National Museum for those who wish to explore Egyptian culture.
This area is well known for being peaceful and quiet which will suit people who are seeking a relaxing break and sunbathing.
For £30 a family can use the large swimming pool at the Mercury Hotel (4 star hotel).
How to get there
Flights to Cairo from £300, travel from Cairo airport for £20 (Egyptian currency is very weak to the £1 / 8.50 Egyptian pounds.) Taxis are very cheap and as is food. Ismalia will suit those who travelled during the 2nd world war, or general holiday makers. It is a lovely little green and clean city, and is still very cultured. Please call me for more info, as i am Egyptian and can tell you all about it.
A private air-conditioned car service can be provided for a whole day trip to Cairo and back to Ismalia for £20 (discounted rate) and Alexandria for £40 (discounted rate).
Ismaïlia (Arabic: الإسماعيلية) is the capital of Egypt's Al Isma'iliyah Governorate. It has a population (including surrounding rural areas) of approximately 750,000. It is located on the west bank of the Suez Canal, approximately half way between Port Said to the north and Suez to the south. The Canal widens at that point to include Timsah, one of the Bitter Lakes linked by the Canal. It was founded in 1863, during the construction of the Suez Canal, by Ismail the Magnificent, after whom the city is named. The head office of the Suez Canal Authority is located in Ismaïlia at the shore of Lake Timsah. It still has a large number of buildings dating from British and French involvement with the Canal. Most of these buildings are still used by Canal employees and officials.
