Suacain
About the home
Suacain was originally an old crofter's cottage, which has been extended and restored to create an exquisite island house, with a setting to take the breath away. Unusually large rooms, an open fire, pine floors, a luxury kitchen, and every comfort. It is in one of the loveliest and most secluded positions on the Isle of Tiree, tucked into the coast 100 yards from the shore, with 360 degree views across the sea to the Scottish mainland and back across the island.
Tiree is one of the sunniest places in the UK, 20 miles off the west coast of Scotland, easily reached by ferry or plane, with long white deserted beaches and all the charm of a traditional crofting community. Enjoy wonderful walks, beach picnics, and a host of sea activities in its endless sandy bays - kite surfing, windsurfing (there's a school on a reservoir, and boards for rent), kayaking, even sand yachting. Try the local shops, the charming 9-hole golf course, sea fishing, pony trekking, mussel picking, boat trips and much else. There are bicycles and cars for hire to explore the island. Or just relax and soak up the views & the wild life.

Further details indoors:
The house is situated beyond the hamlet of Milton at the east end of the island. It is approached along its own track to a secluded spot within a stone’s throw of the shore, with fabulous 360 degree views over the water and the island. It is a warm dry cosy house, fitted out to an exceptionally high standard, with large rooms, all with sea views, and very comfortable furniture.
Off the entrance hall is the original cottage, now converted into a charming self-contained bedroom wing. Also off the hall is the kitchen, and beyond that the large sitting room with views to the sea, an open fire, and a door through to the studio.
The studio has two single sofa beds to accommodate extra occupants. It looks out across the island and the sea on three sides, and leads out to an area in front of the house where you can sit and read or have lunch looking out across the sea. On a good day (and there are many of them on Tiree), you can see as far as Staffa to the east and Jura and Islay to the south. And with a squint of the eye you can see Ben Nevis beyond the Isle of Mull.
The sitting room also opens on to the luxury king-sized kitchen, again with views out to sea, which is fully equipped with a modern Rosiere range, twin fridge-freezers, a microwave, and a Bosch dishwasher. The kitchen extends into a good sized dining area that easily seats up to 8 people.
Upstairs there are two twin bedrooms with their own sea views, and a bathroom with bath and power shower. The third bedroom is on the ground floor in the original old part of the house, with traditional “black house” deep-recessed windows giving views to both east and west. This wing has its own loo and basin, as well as a second bathroom with bath and shower, and there is a small extra sleeping space above it.
In the utility room there is a washing machine and a separate drier. Internet access is available at the Rural Centre on the island (and mobile broadband is available subject to your supplier). The house has an excellent Sony hi-fi/CD player, a flat screen TV, an iPod connection, and electric heating throughout. There is also a wealth of games, quiz books, jigsaw puzzles and wildlife books - all collected over the years.
Suacain is more than just a holiday home. Friends and visitors return to it for its comfort and space, its atmosphere, its setting, and so much that is to see and do on this magical Scottish island.
Further details outdoors:
Like a lot of Tiree houses, Suacain sits on open grazing land, or "machair" in Gaelic. Visitors have absolute freedom to wander the machair, the heather and the rocky foreshore that surround the house (or indeed the rest of this beautiful island). Being in the Gulf Stream, Tiree is milder than the mainland, and drinks are often enjoyed outside in the sunshine, or watching the amazing sunsets. Binoculars are a must for sighting seals, porpoises & seabirds - and the fishing boats that come and go in the fishing harbour near to the house (always happy to sell you a fresh lobster or two).
The island has excellent public services. In the small town of Scarinish there's an RBS bank, a post office, a Scottish Co-op, and wonderful local meat at Maclean's the butchers. The island has two garages and first-rate medical facilities, as well as bars, art galleries and craft shops.

The Hebrides / Skye / Inner Hebrides region

The Hebrides are a varied group of islands scattered off the west coast of Scotland. The Isle of Tiree lies due west of Oban and is reached by ferry from there or by plane from Glasgow. It lies in the Gulf Stream which gives it a mild climate, with one of the best sunshine records in the UK. It measures about 10 miles by 3, with a resident population of around 700.
The Isle of Tiree / Milton area
The island is known for its peace and beauty - home to an extraordinary variety of birds and wild flowering plants, and perfect for reading, painting, listening to music, or just taking in the views and the wildlife. The white beaches and dramatic headlands make for wonderful walks and picnics. Unlike the mainland, Tiree is never crowded, and the wide open spaces and local crofts are a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of ordinary life.
Tiree is also famous for its windsurfing, kite surfing, sand yachting and many other sea activities, thanks to its endless sandy bays, the longest of which is almost 3 miles from end to end. There is an excellent windsurfing school and the island hosts an international championship each October.
Cars are easy to hire on the island, as are bicycles, sand yachts and surf boards. There’s a charming 9-hole golf course, sea and loch fishing, pony trekking, and much else. Boat trips are available to Fingal’s Cave on Staffa and to the puffins on Lunga, or to catch mackerel and seek out the porpoises in Gunna Sound.
The island has 3 good shops, a small restaurant at Sandaig on the West Coast, and its own postal service and doctor. Island specialities include the renowned Tiree lamb and beef and of course local seafood. Fresh vegetables and groceries are supplied by the daily ferry service from the mainland.
To get to Tiree, we favour the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry, which runs daily and takes just under 4 hours from the lovely port of Oban. On a fine day, it is a most beautiful trip down the Sound of Mull then out to sea, and the ferry is big, sound, and easy for cars (with a fine breakfast to boot!). Otherwise, there is a daily flight from Glasgow by Loganair (booked through Flybe), which takes just 40 minutes direct to Tiree.

We took 3 generation of our family to this wonderful home from home the youngest being just 8mths old, the owner was so accommodating arranging cots etc for his comfort. The house has all mod con's and more, the location on the island is just perfect you feel like you are a the edge of the world, watching the seals, birds and even the cow's and sheep who come right up to the door. We will return again and again if the owner allows. Tiree is a wonderful island to totally relax and get away from the rat race on the main land and Suacain the perfect house. |

Our second family holiday at Suacain. The property is in a stunning location with wide sea views from the Small Isles in the north to the Paps of Jura in the south. There are small beaches and coves dotted around Milton that are great for kids to explore, Tiree is reasonably flat and good for family cycling plus there are the obvious surfing attractions. The house is well maintained and has plenty of space. The open plan kitchen / dining / living space works well. |
