The West Country / Dorset region

Dorset is a county in the south-west of England, on the English Channel coast. Dorset borders Devon to the west, Somerset to the north-west, Wiltshire to the north-east, and Hampshire to the east. The county is largely rural with a relatively low population and population density.
Dorset is famous for its beautiful coastline, the Jurassic Coast, which features landforms such as Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door, as well as the holiday resorts of Poole, Bournemouth, Weymouth, Swanage and Lyme Regis.
Dorset is the setting of the novels of Thomas Hardy, who was born near the county town of Dorchester. The county has a long history of human settlement and some notable archaeology, including the hill forts of Maiden Castle and Hod Hill.
The Isle of Purbeck area
Naturally, it is all a matter of taste and preference as to which beach is the 'best' one. The closest is Lulworth Cove at just 5 miles which is shingles and pebbles. However, if you have the strength and not too many buckets and spades to carry, the walk up and over from Lulworth to Durdle Door is worth it as there are two wonderful shingle beaches in a really lovely spot.
The National Trust owns the award-winning Studland Bay so for those of you with NT membership you can park in the car park free of charge. The car park is very close to the ticket cabins for the Sandbanks Ferry. Non-members can park on the private road and walk through the dunes along a very pleasant path. As you approach the beach in your car, you will start to see lots of parked cars and you will need to park as close to the bus stop on the opposite side as you can and then walk along the path behind the bus stop down to the beach - 10-15 minute walk. It takes about 40 minutes from leaving Manor Farm Barn to parking your bum on the golden sand of this beautiful beach.
There are also many coves and beaches along the Dorset coast - a World Heritage site - and hopefully the Ordnance Survey map, which we have left for you, will help you discover them. Just five miles from the coast at Lulworth Cove or about 25 minutes drive from Studland Bay which is renowned for its wonderful beaches and dunes, it is well located for both summer and winter holidays.

This is the third time that I have rented out this cottage for/with a group of friends and always enjoyed our time there - this Christmas was no different: loads of space for 8 people including 3... more |

Instructions well thought out for journey and cottage. We had no trouble finding it. If you did not want to bother the person on the manned crossing every time you went out., just turn right at the first junction when leaving and you come to Wool. There you can find a well stocked store, pub and bakers. The en-suit has the only walk in shower which can be a bit of a pain to the other guests. The main bathroom has a hand held shower on the bath. However ,don't let this put you off,we all worked around it with no problems.Friends and family alike. We all enjoyed our stay and would go again.Great cottage for a group of friends to muck- in and chill out. Response: We are glad to let our guests know that we are just about to remodel the main bathroom to put in a walk-in shower which will be operational by Christmas. |

We stayed at Manor Farm Barn with our toddler and another couple and their toddler. The Barn itself was very roomy downstairs and great for the toddlers to run around, the stair gates provided were essential. The upstairs was a little trickier, finding suitable sleeping arrangements to accommodate a travel cot in with parents involved pushind beds together and moving linen around (it would have been helpful to have all beds made up, or to have access to spare linen to give us a little more flexibility). The cot provided was great but we did have to do some curtain draping to make the open plan area a little more enclosed and sleep suitable. The location was wonderful, very central to many of Dorsets lovely attractions, towns, beaches and so on, it was a shame the weather was so poor the week we stayed although it was nothing that a pair of wellies and a rain coat couldn't fix! The garden was also lovely and perfect for the toddlers. You do need a car as there isn't a shop or pub that is walkable, but 5 minutes in either direction in the car gets you to Wool or Wareham where there are local shops. To make our stay a little more comfortable some newer sofas in the TV room would have been most welcome, and a second shower in the main bathroom (the only shower is in the en suite of one of the main bedrooms). Response: We are glad to let our guests know that we are just about to remodel the main bathroom to put in shower which will be operational by Christmas. |
