The West Country / Dorset region
Dorset is a county in the south-west of England, on the English Channel coast. Dorset borders Devon to the west, Somerset to the north-west, Wiltshire to the north-east, and Hampshire to the east. The county is largely rural with a relatively low population and population density.
Dorset is famous for its beautiful coastline, the Jurassic Coast, which features landforms such as Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door, as well as the holiday resorts of Poole, Bournemouth, Weymouth, Swanage and Lyme Regis.
Dorset is the setting of the novels of Thomas Hardy, who was born near the county town of Dorchester. The county has a long history of human settlement and some notable archaeology, including the hill forts of Maiden Castle and Hod Hill.
The Isle of Purbeck area
Naturally, it is all a matter of taste and preference as to which beach is the 'best' one. The closest is Lulworth Cove at just 5 miles which is shingles and pebbles. However, if you have the strength and not too many buckets and spades to carry, the walk up and over from Lulworth to Durdle Door is worth it as there are two wonderful shingle beaches in a really lovely spot.
The National Trust owns the award-winning Studland Bay so for those of you with NT membership you can park in the car park free of charge. The car park is very close to the ticket cabins for the Sandbanks Ferry. Non-members can park on the private road and walk through the dunes along a very pleasant path. As you approach the beach in your car, you will start to see lots of parked cars and you will need to park as close to the bus stop on the opposite side as you can and then walk along the path behind the bus stop down to the beach - 10-15 minute walk. It takes about 40 minutes from leaving Manor Farm Barn to parking your bum on the golden sand of this beautiful beach.
There are also many coves and beaches along the Dorset coast - a World Heritage site - and hopefully the Ordnance Survey map, which we have left for you, will help you discover them. Just five miles from the coast at Lulworth Cove or about 25 minutes drive from Studland Bay which is renowned for its wonderful beaches and dunes, it is well located for both summer and winter holidays.

We stayed here as part of a group of seven adults for a weekend break in the beginning of February. There was lots of space for all of us. Two double bedrooms (one with an impressive en-suite), two twin bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, big dining room, and comfortable lounge. In addition, in the centre of the barn, a great open hall with a wood-burning stove and sofas - which was where we spent most of our time. Facilities included effective central heating and wifi (albeit with limits to the size of downloads). In a quiet rural location, but part of a row of four converted barns, with farmyard behind and a walled garden in front - so little in the way of countryside views. The owner was very attentive, providing lots of information beforehand, and calling in briefly during the weekend to make sure everything was okay. All in all, we found it an excellent place for a group of seven adults seeking a quiet retreat together, and we'll certainly be back. It's within easy reach, by road, of the Dorset 'jurrasic coast' - but it doesn't conform to the chocolate-box idyll of splendid rural isolation with far-reaching views. Response: Many thanks, Shirley. We look forward to seeing you and your friends again very soon. Best wishes Marc |

This barn conversion was beautiful. It was quiet and peaceful yet just a few miles from several local attractions. It was spacious and clean with a lovely garden to the front where you could sit at daybreak and hear the gibbons sing in the distance at Monkey World. The beds were so comfortable ( my daughter wanted me to take them home!!), the kitchen extremely well equiped and the log fire was a real treat in the cool evenings. Would definitely return here in the future. |

We just knew the cottage was going to be wonderful, after having such great communication with the owner Marc when booking our holiday! We arrived after a very long journey with our two children (1 and 3) and father in law and brother in law, and the cottage was a very welcome site. We were welcomed by the cows in the field opposite which our children adored! We then walked into the gorgeous serene garden and finally got inside the cottage, and felt like we were at home immediately! It has everything you need and want and there was even a bottle of champagne as a very appreciated 'extra'. The safety gates were left out for us to position at the top and bottom of the stairs and a highchair was available for our youngest son which was great. I was actually unwell for the first two days and the cottage was a lovely quiet haven for me and I felt very comfortable snuggled up on the lounge sofa! It was very spacious even with the four adults and two children in it and our three year old loved the fact that he could run around the entire downstairs in one big circle. He had lots of fun doing that most days. The cottage was in a really good and central location to all the places we wanted to visit, which was great! Fabulous cottage owned by a nice generous person in a beautiful area and I would recommend it to anyone. I just wish we could have stayed an extra week just to spend more time in the cottage rather than sightseeing! |
