The West Country region

Dorset is a county in the south-west of England, on the English Channel coast. Dorset borders Devon to the west, Somerset to the north-west, Wiltshire to the north-east, and Hampshire to the east. The county is largely rural with a relatively low population and population density.

Dorset is famous for its beautiful coastline, the Jurassic Coast, which features landforms such as Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door, as well as the holiday resorts of Poole, Bournemouth, Weymouth, Swanage and Lyme Regis.

Dorset is the setting of the novels of Thomas Hardy, who was born near the county town of Dorchester. The county has a long history of human settlement and some notable archaeology, including the hill forts of Maiden Castle and Hod Hill.

Isle of Purbeck

Naturally, it is all a matter of taste and preference as to which beach is the 'best' one. The closest is Lulworth Cove at just 5 miles which is shingles and pebbles. However, if you have the strength and not too many buckets and spades to carry, the walk up and over from Lulworth to Durdle Door is worth it as there are two wonderful shingle beaches in a really lovely spot.

The National Trust owns the award-winning Studland Bay so for those of you with NT membership you can park in the car park free of charge. The car park is very close to the ticket cabins for the Sandbanks Ferry. Non-members can park on the private road and walk through the dunes along a very pleasant path. As you approach the beach in your car, you will start to see lots of parked cars and you will need to park as close to the bus stop on the opposite side as you can and then walk along the path behind the bus stop down to the beach - 10-15 minute walk. It takes about 40 minutes from leaving Manor Farm Barn to parking your bum on the golden sand of this beautiful beach.

There are also many coves and beaches along the Dorset coast - a World Heritage site - and hopefully the Ordnance Survey map, which we have left for you, will help you discover them. Just five miles from the coast at Lulworth Cove or about 25 minutes drive from Studland Bay which is renowned for its wonderful beaches and dunes, it is well located for both summer and winter holidays.

"High spec, good value for money comfortable cottage"

Fab cottage, plenty big enough for the number it sleeps. Good location for Dorset attractions. Useful and timely information from the owner, who even offers to bring you your shopping! Lovely bathrooms. The only problem we had was with the hot water. The wi-fi is a bit slow but the lovely views and country side make up for it.

"Lovely Cottage, Beautiful Location, would stay there again!!"

The cottage is lovely and full of character. The owner Marc is very friendly & helpful in making sure your stay goes smoothly. I went with my husband, our two boys, my daughter and partner and my mum who is 75. Also my shihtzu Archie. (who absolutely loved the garden). The cottage was big enough that we didnt get on top of each other and has everything you need to hand. We enjoyed most evenings sat in the garden with a nice cold beer or glass of wine enjoying the tranquility of this location and the fantastic garden. Its set in a quiet location but everything is in reach for travelling to. Would most definately stop here again.

Well appointed property run by extremely helpful owners. The weather made our stay even more enjoyable. Well positioned to take advantage of the coast.

"Lots of character, lots of space - we'll be back!"

We stayed here as part of a group of seven adults for a weekend break in the beginning of February.

There was lots of space for all of us. Two double bedrooms (one with an impressive en-suite), two twin bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, big dining room, and comfortable lounge. In addition, in the centre of the barn, a great open hall with a wood-burning stove and sofas - which was where we spent most of our time.

Facilities included effective central heating and wifi (albeit with limits to the size of downloads). In a quiet rural location, but part of a row of four converted barns, with farmyard behind and a walled garden in front - so little in the way of countryside views. The owner was very attentive, providing lots of information beforehand, and calling in briefly during the weekend to make sure everything was okay.

All in all, we found it an excellent place for a group of seven adults seeking a quiet retreat together, and we'll certainly be back. It's within easy reach, by road, of the Dorset 'jurrasic coast' - but it doesn't conform to the chocolate-box idyll of splendid rural isolation with far-reaching views.

Many thanks, Shirley. We look forward to seeing you and your friends again very soon. Best wishes Marc

"Fantastic cottage in peaceful location close to local attractions"

This barn conversion was beautiful. It was quiet and peaceful yet just a few miles from several local attractions. It was spacious and clean with a lovely garden to the front where you could sit at daybreak and hear the gibbons sing in the distance at Monkey World. The beds were so comfortable ( my daughter wanted me to take them home!!), the kitchen extremely well equiped and the log fire was a real treat in the cool evenings. Would definitely return here in the future.

"Beautiful cottage in a beautiful part of our country"

We just knew the cottage was going to be wonderful, after having such great communication with the owner Marc when booking our holiday! We arrived after a very long journey with our two children (1 and 3) and father in law and brother in law, and the cottage was a very welcome site. We were welcomed by the cows in the field opposite which our children adored! We then walked into the gorgeous serene garden and finally got inside the cottage, and felt like we were at home immediately! It has everything you need and want and there was even a bottle of champagne as a very appreciated 'extra'. The safety gates were left out for us to position at the top and bottom of the stairs and a highchair was available for our youngest son which was great. I was actually unwell for the first two days and the cottage was a lovely quiet haven for me and I felt very comfortable snuggled up on the lounge sofa! It was very spacious even with the four adults and two children in it and our three year old loved the fact that he could run around the entire downstairs in one big circle. He had lots of fun doing that most days.
The cottage was in a really good and central location to all the places we wanted to visit, which was great!
Fabulous cottage owned by a nice generous person in a beautiful area and I would recommend it to anyone. I just wish we could have stayed an extra week just to spend more time in the cottage rather than sightseeing!

"Great accommodation in a lovely cottage in a beautiful location"

We arrived to a welcoming bottle of champagne and drank it in a beautiful garden surrounded by greenery. The owner and caretaker both checked how things were going during our two week stay but only briefly, leaving us in peace to enjoy our holiday. Full linen changeover half way through our visit.
We had friends staying with us in the four bedroom cottage and so used all the bedrooms frequently. Our children loved the balcony bedroom and this is fine for summertime when no-one is using the sitting room below in the evenings after they've gone to bed.
Loved the kitchen which had more than everything we needed and the fact that there was a separate TV room to the main sitting room.
We loved the garden and outdoor seating areas and the surroundings best although certainly no complaints about the cottage.
Overall we had a wonderful two weeks and would certainly stay there again and recommend to anyone wanting a cottage in Dorset.

Thanks, Nicola and we look forward to welcoming you again the future. Marc

"lovely cottage in a beautiful location"

We had a really excellent stay. The owners provided clear directions, so we found the cottage easily. It was very clean and well equipped, the beds were comfy, the cottage had a friendly atmosphere and the garden was lovely to sit in. The only suggestion we would make is that it would have been useful to have had the recycling explained a little more clearly.

We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay at the cottage and you found it well-equipped and comfy.

I'm sorry that you did not find the details which I include in the welcoming letter at the beginning of your stay nor the papers from the council on the notice board in the kitchen in the cottage sufficient to know exactly what to do with the recycling. I shall certainly bear that in mind for future guests. We do hope to see you and your family again, Alison.

"An excellent holiday house enjoyed by 4 generations!"

We stayed here as a family at the start of July and all had a brilliant time. It is a well equipped house with plenty of space and a lovely outdoor area. The two children (1 and 3 years old) especially loved seeing the cows in the opposite field each morning! It was in a lovely peaceful area but still well placed to visit lots of attractions. A visit to Durdle Door and Swanage are a must especially when the weather is good. Unfortunately the weather wasn't always on our side but we still found loads to do. We would all recommend a visit to this house and the area. Thank you also to Marc for all the helpful information he provided before the trip. We would love to stay here again!
