Taigh Granaidh @ 43 Breasclete
Farmhouse | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
One of the most stunning locations for a rural break could find you relaxing at Taigh Granaidh (Granny's House), a recently refurbished property situated on a working croft in the village of Breasclete on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Sleeping up to 6, the house has two double bedrooms and one twin bedded room. There is a large kitchen / dinette, bathroom with shower and a comfortable sitting room with spectacular views over Loch Roag.
Beside Taigh Granaidh is the croft "loom shed" where guests can learn a bit more about traditional Harris Tweed weaving and even try weaving some of this unique cloth.
Trout fishing can be tried on one of the many nearby lochs and you have your choice of a myriad of unspoilt beaches within easy reach.
The area is rich in archaeology. Callanish Standing Stones, reported to be older than Stonehenge, is 5 minutes away by car. Travel north to visit the ancient fortress of Doune Broch in Carloway, explore Garenin Blackhouse Village in Carloway, the Norse Mill in Shawbost and the Blackhouse in Arnol. All within 15 miles of Granny's.
A short walk from the croft is Sgianault, a rocky beach, where you can catch the low tide and explore the rock pools and you may just find a scallop on the sandy shore. Birdlife is also in abundance with meadow pipits and wagtails, buzzards, oystercatchers, lapwings, redshanks, dunlin, cormorant, black headed and common gulls and more to be seen on the route.
Dalmore and Dalbeg are the closest beaches. Swept by the westerly winds straight off the Atlantic Ocean, Dalmore is a popular surfing destination. We would also recommend visiting Bosta on Great Bernera where there is a reconstruction of an Iron Age house open during the summer. Reef and Ardroil Sands in Uig are also well worth a visit but that's just scratching the surface. Bosta, Reef and Ardroil are all safe for swimmers.
Sunday is a special day here where most folk enjoy a day off from work and consequently most shops are closed. There are some hotels and restaurants open in town and out in the country and of course the beaches and countryside are there for you to explore.

The Hebrides/Skye region
Within 10 minutes by car from Taigh Granaidh visitors can see spectacular beaches, spot golden eagles, try to sneak up on an otter on the loch, cast a fly for trout or salmon, visit an iron age broch, examine the workings of a Norse Mill, embark on a walk across some of the last real wilderness remaining in Europe, take advantage of the dark skies to watch for a display of Northern Lights, or just sit with a dram in hand watching the sun set over Loch Roag.
Isle of Lewis
For many visitors the highlight of any visit to Lewis is always the chance to see the world famous standing stones at Callanish, the neighbouring village to Breasclete. Over 5000 years old, there are several stone circles in the area with the main site in the form of a cross with centre circle around a burial chamber. Travel north for more sites of interest to the ancient fortress of Doune Broch in Carloway, explore Garenin Blackhouse Village in Carloway, the Norse Mill in Shawbost and the Blackhouse in Arnol. All within 15 miles of Granny's.
Within easy reach of the Taigh Granaidh are several beautiful beaches. Dalmore and Dalbeg are the closest, swept by the westerly winds straight off the Atlantic Ocean, Dalmore is a regular surfing destination. We would also recommend visiting Bosta on Great Bernera where there is a reconstruction of an Iron Age house open during the summer. "Lovely Cottage, Fabulous Views"
We really enjoyed our stay, the cottage was as described and a clean, spacious and comfortable home from home which has been a home and so has all that you need to enjoy the house, even cook books and a wonderful library of reference books. The garden was super and for us stone circle enthusiasts the location was perfect for exploring Callanish and all the associated sites, the main site and visitor centre being only about a mile away. Kenny's loom producing Harris Tweed in the old house next door is a fascinating extra facet to staying here, he is very happy to demonstrate the weaving process, a great insight to local life.
Thank you for taking the time to review.
