Benshaw Cottage was a crofter's home which was modernised in early-2014 with good quality kitchen and bathroom facilities as well as new carpets, decor, fine bedwear and furniture. It is now a cosy and inviting self-catering holiday cottage in Tobson on Great Bernera on the west of the Isle of Lewis.

Whether you are an avid photographer, aurora watcher, trout and salmon fisherman, a sea angler or walker or are just a nature lover, Benshaw Cottage is ideal as a base. Lochs and rivers in the Western Isles, also known as the Outer Hebrides, are known for their fishing and the clear, unpolluted air and skies make it very special.

Note: If you are planning a special occasion like a proposal, a birthday surprise, a honeymoon or other special event, just let us know. We can provide a limo or standard car with driver, a professional photographer, a delivery of flowers, etc. Just ask. If we cannot provide it ourselves, we undoubtedly know someone reliable who can.

The Hebrides/Skye region

Tobson is on the island of Great Bernera, which is connected by a road bridge to the Isle of Lewis. It has a lively community atmosphere much of it centred on the Bernera Community Centre which has a cafe, a museum and a games hall. Half a mile away from the centre is the Bernera Shop which has fuel pumps.

Isle of Lewis

When on Great Bernera you should visit the now-uninhabited village of Bosta where there is a superb clean and safe beach and an Iron Age house that has been recovered and rebuilt from the sands. Then you can go wider afield and your day trip could take in the world-famous 5,000-year-old Callanish Stones, often referred to as Scotland's answer to Stonehenge, the Arnol Blackhouse which shows the standard of island housing even 60 years ago as well as the Norse Mill at Shawbost and the golden unspoilt beaches at Reef in Uig or at Luskentyre on Harris.

"Wonderful cottage with 5 star facilities in a beautiful and peaceful setting."

When we left Benshaw Cottage after a superb 4 night break, we felt we were leaving paradise! Words seem inadequate to describe the tranquility and comfort of the cottage. Starting with the kitchen - it has every bit of equipment you would need and we cooked 3 out of the 4 nights. Having 2 fridges in the house is a real bonus! The lounge, bedrooms and bathroom were immaculate and the whole ambience of Benshaw was very tasteful. I enjoyed not having the intrusion of the internet and really felt I could concentrate on relaxing! I could get mobile phone (O2) reception by walking slightly up the hill. Benshaw Cottage has every comfort and amenity to make for a vacation in a rural and quiet part of Lewis. Bosta Beach nearby and the Uig beaches were magnificent and well worth a visit! We toured around the lovely island and enjoyed returning to the cosy Benshaw after the delights of the Lewis landscape.

Thank you very much, ladies. It was a pleasure to have you stay.
