The Decca
About the home
A holiday at the edge of the world!
This is the most north westerly point of Europe and feels remote and unspoiled. There are, however, all mod cons and excellent local services. We offer high quality, spacious self catering cottages with everything you need for a wonderful holiday by the sea. This is a nature reserve with lots of birds and animals all round. Look out for whales, dolphins, golden eagles, golden plovers, lapwings, otters, seals and listen for the elusive and rare corncrake.
There is very good sea and loch fishing, many interesting archaeological and historical sites such as Callanish, Dun Carloway broch and nearby is Dun Eistean, the ancestral stronghold of the Clan Morrison. Ness is home to high qulaity tweed and kilt makers as well as many other local crafts. Gaelic is still spoken by most of the locals though they all speak English too! Music is an integral part of the island way of life and the local bar has regular, fiddle, accordion and pipe music. This is the real Hebrides!

The Hebrides / Skye / Outer Hebrides region
The Outer Hebrides sit at the north western edge of Europe and The Decca lies at their north western tip. This feels like the edge of the world and is an inspiring place where history lies very close to the surface. Gaelic is the first language for most locals and they are very proud of their history and culture. Life has always been hard here with people struggling to win a living from small crofts, fishing and peat cutting.
These are still the activities of the area though most people have regular jobs now and we are well connected with internet. The whole area is interesting as it is unspoiled by development and nature thrives. We have huge flocks of golden plover and lapwings all round the house and the remains of old black houses are everywhere. The weather is exciting and very changeable and never dull with glorious long sunny summer days and wild storms that lash huge waves onto the cliffs and beaches. Summer brings nearly 24 hours of daylight and the skies are enormous.
The Isle of Lewis / Ness area
We are very close to the Butt of Lewis with its famous lighthouse and also Dun Eistean (stronghold of the clan Morrison). Callanish, Dun Carloway broch, Garreanan blackhouse village, Lewes Castle and a host of beautiful sandy beaches are not far away and it is possible to explore further into the isle of Harris, Berneray and Uig in a day. The seafood is fresh and varied and local meat, black puddings... and chocolate have to be tried.
In mid July Stornoway hosts the Hedridean Celtic festival which celebrates and attracts top names in celtic inspired music as well as providing a platform form local musicians and producers of local goods.
