The Hebrides region
Isle of Lewis
The Islands of Harris and Lewis both have spectacular beaches and 99% of the time you will be fortunate enough to have them to yourselves. There are many interesting places to visit including the Callanish Stones, the Broch, the black house village at Gearrannan and the lighthouse at the Butt of Lewis. There are also trips from the south of Harris to St Kilda. These Islands are the home of the famous Harris Tweed industry, an iconic hand woven fabric ,unrivalled in quality, even today. The Islands are also a perfect choice for outdoor activities such as hill walking, fishing, cycling, birdwatching and even surfing.
A car is advisable to enable you to travel around the Islands and therefore most people arrive by ferry. Caledonian Macbrayne run the ferries from both Ullapool on the mainland and Uig on the Isle of Skye. The ferries are often full and booking early is advised especially during the Summer months. Either ferry is suitable for the cottage as we are an equal distance from both towns.

"Katie Morag's Dream!"
Thanks to Alt Dubh we had a holiday that we're still missing a month down the line. We still miss our cosy evenings by the fire, glasses of wine in the garden and bubbles in the hot tub! I've never been in such a cosy cottage with such a beautiful view. I've been on lots of hot tub holidays but none with a hot tub view to the sea! Alt Dubh is the perfect location for exploring. Stornoway is not too far, there's so many walks around the cottage and the main sights of the island are within driving distance. There's even a ruined crofting village next to the cottage. We went to Alt Dubh to fulfil our daughter's dream of being Katie Morag and we weren't disappointed. Our daughter thought it was magical and we spent many cosy evenings in front of the fire watching her Katie Morag DVDs. Alt Dubh is the perfect combination of modern meets traditional. We loved the quirky layout. There is no phone signal so you really do get to escape it all. I even loved washing the dishes as I got to admire the stunning view from the kitchen window! We can't wait to come back one day. It was the perfect family holiday.

"Beautiful and relaxing"
We had a 1 week stay at Alt Dubh, we arrived on Sat afternoon after a 1 night stay in Ullapool. The cottage is really well equipped with everything you need, there was enough logs and coal to last us a few days until we found our way around. There was a pub 12 miles away from the cottage but this was the only one we found outside of Stornaway, so glad we took plenty of provisions as this was the only place for food. The island is gorgeous, especially the south, fantastic beaches and the dog loved it. Saw plenty of wildlife and on the ferry back to Skye we saw dolphins which were amazing! It was great having no internet and TV, there were many nights spent in the hot tub just listening to music. This was a very different but amazing holiday. Thanks

"WOW, a touch of heaven on the isle of Lewis."
I have just returned from a weeks holiday at Alt Dubh on the isle of Lewis, what can I say it is something special. The owners have thought of everything. If you are looking for peace and tranquillity this is the place. There are amazing views with a loch and the sea visible. We walked the short distance to the sea and were welcomed every day by the resident seal. The cottage has everything you would possibly need and has two wood burners in the living and dining room. The spa room separated from the house just adds that extra special touch nothing like sitting in the hot tub after a long walk and admiring the views. The cottage is remote and would advise to use the bigger supermarkets in Stornoway when you arrive. There is a local shop at Ravenspoint and the staff are very friendly and welcoming there is a cafe and free internet usage. I can not think of one thing the owners could change it really is a little touch of heaven and we will be returning soon.

"Idyllic cottage in a quiet and remote location"
Alt Dubh is a comfortable, traditional Lewis Cottage. I had a really great week here, and especially enjoyed the hot tub after a long days walking! The cottage was very clean when I arrived, and well equipped with everything you could want for a self catering week. If you are looking for a very peaceful, relaxing, "getaway from it all" location on Lewis, look no further!

"A perfect place to disconnect"
If you are looking for an idyllic place to disconnect, to get in contact with yourself and with nauture, to spend some real quality time with familiy and friends: this is it. Peacefull, isolated, quiet, cosy, rural, surrounded by mountains, lochs and close by the sea with astonishing views. The Isles of Lewis and Harris are well worth visiting and the people are very friendly. Try also the boat trip by the Uig coast (Seatrek): great fun. The cottage is absolutely beautiful and perfect for 4 persons. Fully equipped: everything you need is there. The sauna and the jacuzzi are the cherry on the pie. Just one thing: if you need internet, wifi or are addicted to your phone or TV, forget it. None of those are available. Go for some peace and quiet and disconnect!
