The Hebrides/Skye region

Lewis and Harris is one island also known as the long island.

Much of Lewis consists of moorland with sparkling freshwater lochs, enjoyed by fishing enthusiasts, while the coastline is a combination of steep cliffs and white sandy beaches , the ones on the west side of the island are particularly popular with surfers due to the most consistent swells in Europe.

Harris is more rocky and mountainous, formed from some of the oldest geology on the planet. Hill walkers can enjoy panoramic views. The west coast of Harris has many beautiful sandy beaches, and a golf course on the edge of the Atlantic.

Situated 40 miles to the west of North Uist is the Island of St. Kilda and visitors may wish to take a boat trip from Lewis or Harris to the UNESCO dual World Heritage Site on St Kilda. Also available are boat trips to see the seals at Loch Flodabay in Harris or 'Fishin Trips' in Lewis to catch your dinner.

If you are looking for ideas for days out, you can download a leaflet produced by Scottish National Heritage - Explore for a Day - Outer Hebrides at www.snh.gov.uk/explore

Isle of Lewis

There are many cultural events held in the islands including the Heb-Celtic Festival to enjoy live music, the Harris Arts Festival where you can immerse yourself in music, drama and craft events. There are local annual festivals celebrating traditional music and culture (Feisan) or if you are feeling more energetic, you may like to attempt the Five Peaks Challenge or take part in Sail Stornoway - a Hebridean Maritime Festival or perhaps visit one of the many local agricultural shows.

There are many galleries throughout the islands showing and selling local and international artwork, as well as crafts, knitwear and handcrafted jewellery and ceramics.

Treat your taste buds to an abundance of local premium produce: Stornoway Black Pudding, Lewis mutton from sheep grazed on heather, smoked salmon and shellfish, award winning Hebridean beer, Hebridean Toffee are only some of the treats on offer.

There are many hotels, restaurants and coffee shops and galleries in Stornoway and throughout the island - many in stunning locations - serving meals, snacks and homebaking

"Lovely house in a great location"

We, a family of three, stayed her in July. The house was lovely, feeling very homely while being modern and uncluttered. It had everything we could have wanted and I especially appreciated the dishwasher. The owners were extremely nice and even welcomed us with home baking. Nothing at all to fault.
