The Hebrides/Skye region
Jura has some of the most spectacular scenery to be found in the Hebredies. With 115 miles of coastline, the three Paps rising dramatically from the centre of the island, and Corryvreckan, the strongest whirlpool in the world, there is plenty to explore. Craighouse is the principal settlement on the island where you will find the usual amenities including post office, general shore, gift shop, tearoom, petrol pumps, and hotel with bar and restaurant.
The island is a haven for wildlife with plenty of opportunity to observe Red deer, wild goats, common and grey seals in their natual habitat. If you're patient you may even encounter and otter or two. Jura is also famous for its bird life, in particular birds of prey. Sea eagle, golden eagle, hen harrier, peregrine falcon and short-eared owl are just a few species present on Jura. And if that isn't enough to keep you entertained, keep an eye on the sea as you travel along the coastal road and you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins, porpoises and whales.
Jura produces one of the finest single malts, and there is no better place to sample it than at the Jura Distillery. Tours and shop available. Jura's only pub is located just 500m from Gealach Lan and serves lunch and evening meals in the pub and bar lounge. The Antlers Tearoom is just 200m down the hill from Gealach Lan and offers lunches and evening meals throughout the main tourist season. It is also well worth a trip to the north end of the island, not just for the spectacular scenery but also to sample Georgina's homebaking at Tea on the Beach.
