The Isle of Bute is Scotland's most accessible island. Situated in the Firth of Clyde, it is served by regular ferry services from the mainland.
Bute is only 33 miles from Glasgow. The principal route to the island is by car and passenger ferry from Wemyss Bay. There are regular train services to the ferry terminus at Weymss Bay, from both Glasgow Central and Paisley Station (5 minutes from Glasgow International Airport).
Glasgow International Airport offers many competitive car hire rates.
From Wemyss Bay, the ferry crossing over to Rothesay, Isle of Bute, takes 35 minutes. There are sailings every 45 minutes at peak times.
If you have more time, we recommend the spectacular scenic route to Bute, accessible from Colintraive at the north end of the island. This picturesque journey is approximately 75 miles by car from Glasgow to Colintraive and shows off some of the most stunning scenery Scotland has to offer. It will take you along the shores of Loch Lomond and through the Arrochar Alps in the heart of Argyll. Skirting the top of Loch Fyne, with views across to Inveraray Castle, you head south and arrive at the Colintraive ferry for the 5-minute crossing to Rhubodach on Bute, with mainly half-hourly crossings throughout the day.
