The Central Scotland/Edinburgh region
The island of Arran is 20 miles long and 56 miles round and is the most accessible of Scotland 's islands, only 2 hours from Glasgow.
Generations of visitors return year after year because quite simply it is stunningly beautiful.
Often justifiably referred to as “ Scotland in Miniature” it boasts spectacular scenery with jagged mountain ridges, sandy beaches and a stunning coastline. Palm trees grow in the temperate climate due to the influences of the Gulf Stream and a wide variety of wildlife are seen including deer, seals and otters. Over 200 species of bird have been recorded here including hen harriers and buzzards and in the higher peaks you may be lucky enough to spot a golden eagle. For further information on the birdlife found on Arran have a look at The Ayrshire and Arran Bird Report
There is a huge range of activities to suit all ages and abilities and you can have as active or relaxing holiday as you wish.
There are fabulous walks, 7 golf courses, cycling, horse-riding and fishing to the slightly more adventurous gorge walking, mountain biking, kayaking and power boating to name only a few of the activities available from Arran Adventure Company.
Explore Brodick Castle, Arran Distillery and the Arran Heritage Museum.
Enjoy the leisure facilities and swimming at Auchrannie Spa resort and be pampered by their wide range of beauty treatments designed to leave you completely relaxed and revitalised.
Arran prides itself on its excellent local produce with a selection of local malts, cheeses, beers and it even has its own chocolate shop which produces mouth watering handmade chocolates.
For dining out there is something to suit all tastes from coffee shops serving delicious home baking to restaurants serving the finest Scottish Cuisine.
Isle of Arran / Brodick area
Brodick is the main Town on the Isle of Arran, and as such has plenty to do right on your doorstep. There are numerous bars, restaurants, cafes serving quality food. The main street has a co-op supermarket, bank, post office, gift shops, newsagents, Spar, fish & chip bar, chinese restaurant and 'outdoor' shops.
Explore Brodick Castle, Arran Distillery or enjoy the 4* leisure facilities at Auchrannie Spa Resort (directly adjacent to "Glen Rosa Lodge". For the slightly more adventurous why not try abseiling; gorge walking, mountain biking or canoeing just a few of the many activities available from Arran Adventure Centre, which again is just a short walk from "Glen Rosa Lodge". * Wonderful walks, wildlife (birds, seals, deer), boat cruises, ceilidhs - there is something for everyone.
How to get there
FERRY CROSSINGS The main ferry to Arran runs from Ardrossan to Brodick, takes 120 cars and 1000 passengers, and is currently serviced by Calmac. The service runs a return journey 4-5 times a day all year round with some extra sailings during the peak summer months. The crossing takes approx. 55 mins. Further information is available on the Calmac website www.calmac.co.uk where it is possible to make on line bookings.
Calmac also run a smaller ferry runs between Cloanaig (on the Kintyre peninsula) and Lochranza so it is possible to combine a trip to Arran with a visit to this beautiful part of the world including the famous golf links at Machrihanish. It is advisable to book both ferries in advance as they can become very busy in peak times.
FLYING The budget airline "Ryanair" has regular flights into Prestwick Airport from Stansted in London, and many other areas of Europe. There is a railway station at Prestwick with a regular service directly to Ardrossan Harbour where you catch the ferry to Arran.
Budget airline, "Easy Jet" fly from all over the UK and Europe to Glasgow Airport. There is a direct rail link between Ardrossan and Glasgow central airport as well as a bus link.
It is also possible to fly to the Isle of Arran by Helicopter. Our property "Glen Rosa Lodge", is situated directly adjacent to the "Auchrannie House Hotel & Spa", which has it's own Helicopter landing pad.
CARS & BUSES Competitive car hire is available at both Prestwick and Glasgow airports. Please remember to book a place on the ferry in advance as it can be very busy in peak times. Buses run from the harbour to within 500m of "Glen Rosa Lodge", so whilst a car is advisable, it is not essential. An excellent bus service also links all parts of the island, including the famed Brodick Castle and many other beautiful land marks.
