The Central Scotland/Edinburgh region
The island of Arran is 20 miles long and 56 miles round and is the most accessible of Scotland 's islands, only 2 hours from Glasgow.
Generations of visitors return year after year because quite simply it is stunningly beautiful.
Often justifiably referred to as “ Scotland in Miniature” it boasts spectacular scenery with jagged mountain ridges, sandy beaches and a stunning coastline. Palm trees grow in the temperate climate due to the influences of the Gulf Stream and a wide variety of wildlife are seen including deer, seals and otters. Over 200 species of bird have been recorded here including hen harriers and buzzards and in the higher peaks you may be lucky enough to spot a golden eagle. For further information on the birdlife found on Arran have a look at The Ayrshire and Arran Bird Report
There is a huge range of activities to suit all ages and abilities and you can have as active or relaxing holiday as you wish.
There are fabulous walks, 7 golf courses, cycling, horse-riding and fishing to the slightly more adventurous gorge walking, mountain biking, kayaking and power boating to name only a few of the activities available from Arran Adventure Company.
Explore Brodick Castle, Arran Distillery and the Arran Heritage Museum.
Enjoy the leisure facilities and swimming at Auchrannie Spa resort and be pampered by their wide range of beauty treatments designed to leave you completely relaxed and revitalised.
Arran prides itself on its excellent local produce with a selection of local malts, cheeses, beers and it even has its own chocolate shop which produces mouth watering handmade chocolates.
For dining out there is something to suit all tastes from coffee shops serving delicious home baking to restaurants serving the finest Scottish Cuisine.
Isle of Arran / Whiting Bay area
Whiting Bay is on the scenic east coast of Arran, 8 miles from the main ferry terminal at Brodick. It has an excellent choice of quality restaurants, coffee shops, well-stocked village shops, newsagent, pharmacy, garage and post office. There is a lovely sandy beach with views of the Holy Isle, children's play park and 18 hole golf course with fantastic views of the Ayrshire coast. There are a further 6 courses on Arran each with its own individual
Explore Brodick Castle, Arran Distillery or enjoy the leisure facilities at Auchrannie Spa Resort. For the slightly more adventurous why not try abseiling; gorge walking, mountain biking or canoeing just a few of the many activities available from Arran Adventure Centre. * Wonderful walks, wildlife (birds, seals, deer), boat cruises, ceilidhs - there is something for everyone.
How to get there
The main ferry to Arran is the one from Ardrossan to Brodick and takes 120 cars and 1000 passengers. The service runs a return journey 4-5 times a day all year round with some extra sailings during the peak summer months. Further information is available on the Calmac website www.calmac.co.uk where it is possible to make on line bookings. A smaller ferry runs between Cloanaig(on the Kintyre peninsula) and Lochranza so it is possible to combine a trip to Arran with a visit to this beautiful part of the world including the famous golf links at Machrihanish. The budget airline Ryanair has regular flights into Prestwick from Stansted airport and Easy jet has regular flights to Glasgow. There is a direct rail link between Ardrossan and Glasgow central airport as well as a bus link. Strathconon is close to a direct bus route which goes all the way round the island so although a car is advisable it is not essential.
