The Costa de la Luz / Huelva Province region
One of Europe's best kept holiday secrets is the 'Spanish Algarve', the western end of the famous Andalusian Costa de la Luz. For centuries this has been the traditional crossing point between the Portuguese Algarve and Spain. The miles of beautiful, clean beaches have long been a popular holiday destination with the people from Seville, Madrid and other parts of Spain, but remain virtually unknown to the rest of Europe.
The Spanish Algarve still has authentic Spanish towns, villages and fishing ports, a wide variety of traditional cuisine (every restaurant will tell you that they invented tapas), stunning scenery and a multitude of activities, including sports such as golf, bowls, sailing and kitesurfing. It is an area rich in history, and maintains the vibrant cultural traditions that have defined the area for so long.
Islantilla / Campo de Golf area
25 kilometres east of the Portuguese border, on the dramatic, Atlantic Costa de la Luz, is the highly esteemed resort of Islantilla;. Development started here in the early 1990's so Islantilla has many modern facilities, including golf course and sailing school, but without the brashness sometimes found in resorts on the other Costas. It is an almost completely Spanish tourist destination, having proved very popular with the people of Seville, Madrid and other parts of Spain; this lack of 'outside' influence means that the restaurants, bars and overall ambience have remained authentically Spanish.
Islantilla glories in one of the fine beaches typical of this part of the Andalucian coast. Ten kilometres of fine white sand, backed by dunes and a pretty promenade, make this a great location for family holidays, although . A number of beach bars will provide the essental drinks and snacks.
Islantilla's 'jewel in the crown' is it's 27-hole international standard golf course, which has played host to a number of important tournaments, including the PGA Spanish Open; the course is also the winter home of the PGA Golf Unions of Sweden and Denmark.
Islantilla makes a good base from which to explore Atlantic Andalucia. This part of Spain contains a number of very important wildlife habitats and natural parks, including the internationally known Parque Nacional de Doņana , home to an incredible multitude of wildlife in its sand dunes, marshes, pine woods, salt flats and freshwater lagoons.
