Villa | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 6
A 2-bedroomed luxury house which will suit those who want to holiday on a charming, unspoilt island with lovely restaurants. The house is around 200 years old and has been totally renovated to a very high standard. There are two spacious terraces from which to admire the spectacular views. The rooms are spacious and the two bedrooms and two bathrooms are fairly equal, making this a very suitable house for two couples as well as a family. It is in Kut, a small hamlet around the bay from Vis Town, and is located in a small quiet square right in front of the furthest part of the quayside. The house has uninterrupted views over the bay and the sea and faces towards the sunset, making evening drinks on the terrace a truly memorable experience.
The large bay has Vis “Town” on one side and Kut on the other with green hills behind. Both villages are really just a straggle of beautiful old stone houses, just two or three houses deep from the sea to the countryside behind in most places. There are lots of gardens – with bougainvillia, plumbago, and cascading pelargoniums, plus orange, lemon and olive trees everywhere. The ferry arrives in Vis Town, and it is a 20 minute walk or five minute taxi ride to Kut on the more “upmarket” quiet side of the bay. Venice used to own the island, and hundreds of years ago wealthy Venetians built some lovely houses which they used as holiday homes. Many of these were in Kut, and so the place has a lovely architectural heritage. There are cobbled streets, stone steps, an old clocktower etc. It is also home to some of the best restaurants on the island where you can get beautiful seafood and of course (Italian influence) lots of pasta, risotto and pizza dishes.
There is a simple cocktail bar with rattan chairs outside in a nearby square, and the two nearest restaurants, both right by the water's edge, serve coffees and cappuccinos throughout the day. Plus Kut has the best ice cream shop on the island, just two minutes from the house (big mistake!) From Kut you can walk around the bay to Vis Town (about 15 mins to the nearest part) or you can cycle (about 5 mins). Bikes can be hired cheaply on the island and are very popular. There are a few more shops, a daily market, and plenty of restaurants in Vis Town, though this is a very quiet, non-commercial island.
