The Aegean Islands region
Evia, the second largest Greek Island, has been described as an Island Apart as it is different to the others. Although close to the Sporades ie. Skiathos and the Cyclades ie.Mykonos,Naxos etc it is a combination of all these groups. The area enjoys a Mediterranean climate with usually low humidity rain falling 50 or 60 days a year. The island can be reacehd via several ferry ports on the mainland and even two bridges at the narrowest point at Chalkida, the capital.
Island of Evia / Karystos area
Karystos the main town nearest to the Villa is working fishing port and has plenty of tavernas and ouzo bars on the harbour front. The harbour is dominated by the Bourtzi, a Venetian fort. The road west from the harbour leads around the bay with numerous secluded beaches. For those persons who enjoy walking there a several gentle strolls around the villages of Mili, Nikasi, Grabia and Aetos. Intermediate walkers would be interested by the Quarries at Kalandri where the Romans quarried for their Chipolino marbleused for the columns of buildings throughout the Roman Empire. Then there are the Dragon Houses on the top of Mount Ochi. Why were they built? Another good walk is the Dimosari Gorge a good 4 hour walk to the villahe of Kallianou. A recent addition is a bowling alley situate out of town away from the harbour. The tavernas in the villages around Aetos where the villa is located are all worth a visit. Still very tradional.
