Home description
Casa Scirocco is a comfortable apartment on the ground floor of a recently renovated 3-apartment villa, on the green Northern coast of Elba island. The beautiful beach of Procchio is a few-minutes-walk away and when you need a break from swimming, sunbathing or strolling, you may rent a sail boat, a water bike or a canoe, or just enjoy a tasty "schiaccina" or a sun-set dinner in one of several seaside places. The beach promenade brings you in a few minutes to the village of Procchio, where you can buy groceries, find a ATM or just taste a wonderful "aperitivo" or an ice cream. Procchio hosts a weekly open air market and a small crafts market in summer evenings. Our place is ideally sited as a starting point for trekking and enjoying the stunning, national-park landscapes of the wooded interior of the island, and our house is perfect also for off-season enjoyment. If you want a little evening entertainment, the lively old harbours of Portoferraio, Marciana Marina or Marina di campo are just 15 minutes away. And if you do decide to come without a car, our house is a few meters from a stop of the extensive bus network of the island.

The Tuscany region
The Isle of Elba is the biggest of the seven islands in the Tuscan archipelago (most of which now enjoys National Park protected status) and only 10 km from Piombino harbour on the mainland. It is renowned for being the greenest island in the Mediterranean, covering an area of 223 sq. km., with spectacular mountains alternating with woodland areas, hills covered with typical Mediterranean vegetation sloping down to crystal clear sea and a few vineyards which produce the famous “Elba Bianco” wine. In short, a paradise not only for nature lovers and sun-bathers, but also for horse riders, mountain bikers and hikers who can explore the mountain trails and even climb the island’s highest peak (Mt. Capanne, 1018 metres). The less energetic can take a cable car to ascend to the summit. Portoferraio is certainly worth a visit: three renaissance forts round it. It is nice to be there in the evenings, promenading in the old harbour (where mainly yachts and fishing boats are berthed now). It is also possible to visit the residences of Napoleon, during his brief reign of the Island. Marciana Marina and Capoliveri are beautifully restored sea-side villages. The old mountain-top villages of Marciana, Poggio, San Piero and Sant’Ilario are a must, both for their quiet atmosphere and for the breatthaking views.
There are many places to visit on the island, besides the well-known Napoleon Bonaparte sites. There are the remains of an ancient Roman villa and traces left by the Etruscans, Romans and, Normans and Saracen invasions in various parts of the island. Elba is also renowned for its variety of minerals and a visit to the old mines is recommended.
Many visitors like to combine a holiday on the Island with a few days sightseeing in Florence (only about two hours from Piombino), Pisa or Siena
Island of Elba / Procchio area
There are many things to do for active people: besides walking, hiking and biking, other activities include horse riding, mountain gliding, golfing playing tennis and, of course, swimming, sailing and diving. The GTE (Grande Traversata Elbana = Great Elban Crossing) is a trail that crosses the Island from Northeast to Southwest. The paths cross nearly pristine stretches and offer breathtaking views. It is possible to walk the GTE in 5 or 6 easy pieces, each a few hours long, easily reached by public transportation.
All kind of beaches can be found on the island. The Gulf of Procchio (where our house is sited) is rather large, with a relatively long beach offering all kind of water sports and eating places. More restaurants and pleasant shops and an evening craft-market can be found in the village.
How to get there
The nearest airport is Pisa, connected low-cost to nearly all European countries. All major car rental companies have an office there. It is a one-hour highway drive from the airport to the ferry terminal on the mainland (Piombino). The crossing from Piombino to Portoferraio, on the Elba island, takes one hour and there are ferries nearly every hour. Our home is a 15 min drive from the harbour in Portoferraio. Alterantive airports are Florence (two hours) and both airports of Rome (three hours). All of them, particularly Rome Ciampino are served by low-cost airlines and connceted to virtually all European countries. The harbour of Piombino can be reached as well by train, from Pisa/Florence and Rome. The small airport on Elba island as a few scheduled flights, in high season, to Milan, Zurig and Augsburg..

Guestbook
Hello Cecilia! We love Elba... We LOVE your house... And the Apricots are ripe! We are taking care of your plants in the garden. We're staying here for ever! John... Beverley's big brother.
Hi Cecilia, Well we had a wonderful holiday. The house and its garden were absolutely perfect. I will recommend it to everybody interested. Everything was in the house that we could possibly need - even more in fact. It was also spotlessly clean and very nicely decorated. We had many barbeques and we checked out your recommended restaurants. We all found Taverna the best of all. The fact sheet you sent was a great help with all the tips and route description. In the two weeks we just about explored the whole island but we all had to agree that where we were staying was one of the nicest. Beverley
Hi Cecilia, I just wanted to write to let you know that We had a fantastic time on Elba Island in September. your apartment was perfect for us, very comfortable and relaxing, we spent many evenings enjoying a glass of wine and a chat outside. My husband Steve took it on board to look after the garden etc.. My parents throughly enjoyed their extra few days and found the local transport great, they had great fun exploring the island. I have been spreading the word amongst my famiily (a very large one) so hopefully you will get a few bookings next year. Anyway thanks again, We will definitely be back. Jenny
