The Dalmatia region
Dalmatia is a region on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, in modern Croatia, spreading between the island of Rab in the northwest and the Gulf of Kotor in the southeast. The hinterland, Inner Dalmatia, ranges from fifty kilometers in width in the north but narrows to just a few kilometers wide in the south. Croatian Dalmatia is currently composed of four counties, the capital cities of which are Zadar, Sibenik, Split and Dubrovnik. This region is full of islands, mountains and rivers, each one more breath-takingly beautiful than the next... In addition to its outstanding scenery, the area is steeped in history; the crossroads of sea-ways, during the prehistoric and ancient times, the towns of old Salona/Split developed as the metropolis of the Roman province Dalmatia. 2000 year old features remain today.
Because of the way sea currents and winds flow, the sea water of the Adriatic is much cleaner and much warmer on the Croatian side than it is on the Italian side. The Dalmatian concordant coastline also includes an immense number of coves, islands and channels. This makes it a really attractive place for nautical races, and nautical tourism in general.
Dalmatia also includes several national parks that are tourist attractions in their own right! Paklenica Karst river, Kornati archipelago, Krka river rapids and Mljet islands are amongst these natural beauties...
Island Hvar / Hvar area
Hvar belongs to the central island group of the Adriatic and lies in an east-west direction at right angles to the coast. These islands together are called "The Hvar Group". The eastern promontory of Hvar is only 4.5 km away from the mainland, while the western one faces the open sea. It is the longest of the Adriatic islands. "Lower Hvar", the western part, is called the "head of the island", as its main area. Plume - the eastern part - gets narrower towards "the top".
Hvar (68 km long), is also the fourth largest in area (300 sq. m). The longitudinal road which links the town of Hvar with Sućurje at the eastern end of the island is 84 km long. The high plateau between St. Nicholas hill (626 m) and Hum (603 m) which extends from Sv. Nedjelja to Jelsa and is partly under pine woods and partly under arable land is marked by distinctive beauty and a fresh climate. The flat part of the island between Stari Grad, Vrboska and Jelsa is under vineyards which produce up to 50,000 hectoliters of wine per year.
