BookThe Costa Calida region
The Costa Calida (The warm coast) is the coastal area of the Murcia region in south eastern Spain. The area enjoys some of the best weather in Spain and rainfall is very scarce.. The area is also referred to as the salad bowl of Europe because of the quality of the local produce, tomatoes in particular.
Here on the Costa Calida temperatures in summer can range from thirty plus degrees on the coast and up to forty plus degrees inland. The coast is normally cooled by gentle sea breezes making sunbathing very enjoyable. There are plenty of things to do in the Murcia region making it more than just a beach holiday eg walking, scuba diving, culture, motor cycling, cycling etc
The area is steeped in rich history dating back to Roman times and beyond. Be sure to visit the capital city of the region Murcia which is less than one hour from Isla Plana and take time to stroll around its narrow streets and lanes and discover some wonderful architecture. The cathedral in Murcia is well worth a visit. The shops are very good too!
The second city of the region is Cartagena only a twenty five minutes scenic drive from the apartment. Here you can spend a leisurely day soaking up the atmosphere of this old Roman City. The city is still a working naval port and is also a stop over point for Mediterranean cruise liners. Be sure to try the tapas served in all the café bars for a real taste of Spain. The pace of life is very relaxing and the architecture is stunning.
Further afield in the region you can visit the wine region of Jumilla in the northeast or Bullas in the northwest. Both areas are well worth a day trip. If nature is your scene be sure to visit the Sierra Espuña National Park where you can go walking, mountain biking, quad biking or just soak up the atmosphere of the flora and fauna. Have lunch in one of the restaurants in the park and you might be lucky enough to see the wild boar come down to the restaurant for tit bits as you enjoy your coffee after your meal.
For those looking for wet and wild water adventure visit Terra Natura at Murcia or the water park at Vera just over an hour away on the new motorway from Mazarron to Vera. The region boasts two major health spas at Archena and Fortuna both accessible on day trips.
If you are into golf you will be spoilt for choice with the number of courses to choose from and all within reasonable travelling distance.
For the shoppers there are a number of new shopping malls throughout the area. The biggest ones being in Murcia and Cartagena.
The Isla Plana / Mojon Hills Resort area
Isla Plana is a small fishing village. It has a few shops which will fulfil your day to day needs and a bakery selling fresh bread daily. The beach is quiet and the sea very safe to swim or paddle.....depending how energetic you are!
The beach sunsets are stunning.
There are beautiful beachside walkways that are landscaped and designed to make the most of the views and curve of the coast. You can walk to Puerto Mazarron along the coast for a pleasnt sea walk and reward yourself with a lovely drink and meal at one of the many restaurants around the new marina at Puerto Mazarron enjoying the view and soaking up the spanish evening atmosphere. From Puerto Mazarron Bay you can appreciate the magnificent back drop of the Mojon Hills on the horizon.
The area is well known for scuba diving trips and these can be arranged locally as well as boat trips.

We stayed at Casa Bonbon in September 2011, a group of 4 adults & two young children. Having had little experience of driving abroad we were slightly wary but the directions we recieved were perfectly clear & we were at the villa just over an hour after leaving alicante airport. On arrival we found that the villa was clean, spacious & beautifully furnished. We soon settled in & the villa with its great amenities (kettle, toaster, microwave, cooker ,fridge, freezer, dishwasher etc) was as comfortable as home. Conveniently located opposite the pool which the kids ( & adults come to mention it!!) absolutley loved -the corner jacuzzi helping to add to the relaxing holiday atmosphere. The sun terrace offers spectacular views & is the perfect place to relax with a drink (or 3) Isla Plana is a quiet little village with an authentic spanish feel & is just a five minute walk from the villa. The village boasts a bakers, a butchers, a general store and a few restaurants & as it is a quiet village & not a main tourist resort you get more for your euros than you might in other more popular tourist areas. The village is very picturesque & walks along the local beach & promenade (near the local chapel) offer some beautiful views of the sea & the coastline. About a 10 minute drive (8 euros in a taxi) from Isla Plana is Puerto de Mazzaron, which offers a larger variety of stores, supermarkets, restaurants & bars. We enjoyed visits to many of the local restaurants in Puerto De Mazzaron for lunch & there is a larger beach area & harbour there. Would definitely recommend a day trip to Cartagena which is nearby, this historical city offers plenty to see & is a great day out. All in all we had a brilliant holiday at Casa Bonbon & would definitely recommend it to everyone. |
