Southern Italy region
Isca Marina sullo Jonio, is situated in Calabria the deep south of Italy. The area is a well known tourist spot for Northern Italians, but has remained a well hidden secret from the rest of the world. The East or Ionian coast especially has been spared from mass tourism, so has maintained it's old world rural charm. The area is blessed with miles of unspoilt sandy beaches.
As the region is so far south it enjoys a Mediterranean climate, hot Summers with mild Winters. The cuisine has also a more Mediterranean influence with lots of fish and fresh fruit and vegetables in the diet.
Our apartment is situated in Isca only a very short stroll from the beach. It's is also just a short stroll from Isca Marina village. Here you will find everything you need from supermarket, bakery, butcher, chemist, fruit and vegetable shop to post office.
The hillsides around the area are dotted with old villages, most dating back to Medieval times and have to be explored. Some of the most noted ones to visit are Badolato and Sant'Andrea both only a short drive from Isca Marina. A little further south you will find Gerace and Stilo. Heading north from Isca there is Staletti, Squillace and many more, too numerous to mention. Squillace has taken it's name from Old Squillace which was know as Squillacium and is renowned for it's pottery making, here you will find lots of shops selling their own style of hand crafted and designed pottery. A little further north just off the coast road SS106 you will find the archeological site of Squillacium. This very large well maintained site is well worth a visit with it's amphitheater, acres of mature olive trees, (some of the oldest in Calabria) and it's on site museum.
