The Calabria region
Calabria is often described as the hidden gem of Italy. With its miles and miles of sandy beaches and mountains running down to the sea, it has lots to offer the discerning tourist.
The hills come alive in springtime with many varieties of wild flower, turning the landscape into a patch work quilt of colour, from purple to blue, white yellow and the vibrant splash of poppy red. Combine this with the beautiful turquoise blue of the Ionian sea and you can understand why it is called the 'hidden gem.'
Steeped in history, some of the hillside villages date back to the 15th century and beyond.
Calabria weather becomes cooler and more changeable during winter although it still remains the warmest region in peninsular Italy. Mild winter days of 15 - 17c are normal at this time of year and visitors can expect around 5 hours of sunshine a day. The east coast beach resorts enjoy the best winter weather in Calabria region and it boasts the most consistent year round climate in Europe.
Isca Marina on the East Coast of Calabria is situated between the towns of Badolato and Sant'Andrea Marina. It has the beautiful Ionian sea lapping its shore line and magnificent green hills rising up behind it. These surrounding hills are scattered with many ancient villages, from Gerace in the south to Badolato which is only a short drive from Isca. Explore their narrow winding cobbled streets or experience the spectacular views from their vantage points high in the hills.
In Isca Marina itself, only a short walk from our townhouse you will find café's, bars, supermarkets, fruit and veg. shop and a wonderful bakery.
The beach is only a few minutes stroll away – in Summer time it comes alive, with many beach bars and restaurants available. You can sample Mediterranean cooking at its best, from fresh fish, to sun dried tomatoes, olives and fresh mozzarella cheese.
Soverato the nearest large town, is only a short twenty minutes drive away. With it's many restaurants and wine bars tucked down the side streets it hosts a large market every Friday.
