Irsina

Irsina, a little known town in a little known region. A remnant of the time when Basilicata was the centre of the world, when Frederico II, stupor mundi, wonder of the world, Holy Roman Emperor made the region his capital. Site of famous battles when one world, one power saw off another. The old Palazzo, the Cathedral, a myriad of little churches, the metres thick town walls all tell of the town's once illustrious past. Now its myriad of tiny streets that wind through its quarters and squares tell of an era when every room housed a family and filled the air with the din of everyday life. Now they are slowly coming back to life as people rediscover the old town, where old traditions continue at least for another generation - making tomato sauce in August, pressing grapes in October and the olive harvest in November, wild boar hunting through the winter and collecting the plentiful wild vegetables such as succulent asparagus in season. Food is whole some and fresh, the restaurants full of families at the weekends, and around is a treasure of other small towns, bigger ones like Matera with its UNESCO world heritage cave dwellings and churches, hundreds of dinosaur footprints forever captured in a local quarry, national parks with unique flora and fauna, walks, two seas, Magna Gracia and even skiing all within an hour or two drive.
