The Heart of England / Peak District / Shropshire region
Shropshire, a rural county bordering Wales, is fairly sparsely populated, with no cities, and only two major towns (Shrewsbury and Telford). It is however, home to several small towns of great historical importance, such as Wellington, Dawley, Madeley, Bridgenorth and Ironbridge. Shropshire is still one of England's best kept secrets. The landscape is wild and castles abound - this is border country!
It is arguably most famous for being considered “The birthplace of industry”. The Ironbridge Gorge is renowned throughout the world as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Pioneering industrialists including Sir Basil Brooke, the four Abraham Darbys, William Reynolds, and Richard Wilkinson led to the area becoming the most technologically advanced in the world by the close of the 18th century. The legacy of revolution includes the remains of the furnace where the first Abraham Darby smelted iron using coke for the first time in 1709 and, the world's first Iron Bridge, constructed in 1779 by the third Abraham Darby.
Shropshire is home to English naturalist Charles Darwin, the first man to swim the English channel Captain Webb, and 80’s pop band T’Pau.
Telford and Shrewsbury are the county's two main retail centres, with contrasting styles of shopping - Shrewsbury's largely historic streets and Telford's large modern mall, Telford Shopping Centre. Shrewsbury also has two medium-sized shopping centres, the indoor 'Pride Hill' and 'Darwin' centres (both located on Pride Hill), and a smaller, partially covered, 'Riverside Mall'. Shrewsbury's situation of being the nearest substantial town for those in a large area of mid-Wales helps it draw in considerable numbers of shoppers, notably on Saturday.
Despite the relatively small population of the county, it is developing at a rapid pace, creating a blend of very old and very new.
Ironbridge area
Numerous Leisure centres populate the county (the nearest being Madeley leisure centre) and an Ice Rink in Telford town centre. There are also several leisure parks, and “Wonderland” in Telford town centre aimed for the little ones.
Walking distance to Blists Hill Victorian village, transport links or five minute drive to centre of Ironbridge and the river Severn.
The Ironbridge museums are also worth a look. The ten museum sites run by the Trust are: 1. Blists Hill Victorian Town, including the Hay Inclined Plane 2. Broseley Pipeworks 3. Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron 4. Coalport China Museum 5. Coalport Tar Tunnel 6. Darby Houses 7. Enginuity 8. Iron Bridge and Tollhouse 9. Jackfield Tile Museum 10. Museum of the Gorge
There are also many nearby restaurants. There is less than a 20 minutes drive to Bridgnorth and its many historic features. Short walk to artificial ski slope and swimming baths.
A walk to the top of the Wrekin reveals spectacular views of the entire county. Also views from Carding Mill Valley shows the hidden beauty of the area.
Despite its historical value, there is something for everyone here.
