The Heart of England/Peak District
Once described as "the most extraordinary district in the world", the Ironbridge Gorge, a World Heritage Site, is still a remarkable, and beautiful place to visit today. A huge amount of early industry survives as furnaces, factories, workshops, canals and the settlements of Coalbrookdale, Ironbridge, Jackfield and Coalport.
The Look Out is nestled high in the Gorge with a 'Birds Eye View' view of the Ironbridge itself. It is literally only 2 minutes walk down into the centre of Ironbridge where you will find many museums to visit and, as Ironbridge is surrounded by outstanding natural beauty there are numerous walks and cycle routes with scenic views and perfect tranquility to help to re charge your batteries away from the fast pace of modern day living.
Other outdoor activities on offer are canoeing, kayaking, fishing, river trips, gliding and golf.
Numerous Pubs and restaurants are available to suit all tastes whether its sitting outside overlooking the river or an intimate dinner for two.
Blists Hill Victorian Town (2 mi)
At Blists Hill Victorian Town you can meet the Victorians in their shops, cottages and workplaces, see all the animals, enjoy a horse and cart ride or a cone of traditional Fish and Chips.
Enginuity (0.5 mi)
Switch on your imagination in our interactive Design & Technology Centre and discover how good ideas are turned into great products. Find out how a little ingenuity will let you pull a 10 ton locomotive or generate electricity from flowing water. Look at familiar objects with new eyes using the giant X ray machine, build an earthquake proof tower and challenge our robotic arm.
Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron (0.5 mi)
Explore the site and the remains of the water powered blast furnace where Abraham Darby I perfected the smelting of iron with coke instead of charcoal. It was the secret that helped make iron the essential material of the Industrial Revolution
Darby Houses (0.75 mi)
Experience the everyday life of Coalbrookdale's Quaker ironmasters in the former homes of the Darby family - Rosehill House and Dale House. From their doorsteps you will get a grandstand view of the restored Furnace Pool which once helped power the ironworks. Step inside the houses and you will discover rooms packed with original family furniture, china, momentos, costumes and family papers.
Broseley Pipe works (2 mile)
Broseley, two miles from the Ironbridge, was once home to one of the most prolific clay tobacco pipe making factories in Britain. Production came to an\end in the 1950's when the works were abandoned and left untouched until reopened as a Museum in 1996. In the restoration little has been changed since the workers left. The Museum is a wonderfully preserved time capsule of an ancient local industry.
There is so much to do in Ironbridge. Listed below are a few examples and there is a well stocked information box in the property.
The Iron Bridge & Tollhouse (0.5 mile)
The Tollhouse is now open every weekend during the local school summer holidays or by prior arrangement for groups and school parties. Follow in the footsteps of millions of tourists who since 1779 have journeyed here to marvel at the world's first cast-iron bridge.
Jackfield Tile Museum (1 mile)
As you wonder through the original gas-lit trade show room, galleries and period room setting you will be able to see, touch and even walk on magnificent British tiles.
Tar Tunnel (1 mile)
A short walk from Coalport China Museum, alongside the Shropshire Canal, takes you to the Tar Tunnel; over 200 years ago natural bitumen trickled like treacle into pools.
25 minutes drive away, in Bridgnorth, Farafoot Bushcraft, Wild Therapy and Wild Running Company is located - www.farafoot.co.uk
