The Scottish Highlands region
Inverness is the capital city of the Highlands of Scotland. It is very picturesque, with the river Ness running through the centre. It is a good base for touring the Highlands and Islands and Moray, there are good transport links and many day trips are possible, including to the Orkney Islands. The scenery of the Highlands is spectacular with many opportunities for outdoor activities. There are many famous golf courses located in the region. The geology of the area is very notable, with 2 of Scotland's Geoparks located with the region, one of which is recognised by Unesco. Some of the oldest rocks in Europe are to be found on the surface here. The Cairngorms National Park is situated here. There are superb beaches located throughout the Highlands. The region is quiet and unspoilt. A good place to get away from the crowds and pressures of modern living. There are many festivals and events held here, pop festivals, traditional music, Highland games, outdoor activities events and festivals. Many of these centre on Inverness.
Inverness City Centre
Smithton is a quiet suburb of Inverness, with easy access to the airport, and the East, North and South of the Highlands. There are many activities happening in Inverness where there is a theatre and many spaces for traditional and other types of music and entertainment. There are many places in Smithton and neighbouring Culloden to walk along paths and lanes and through the woods. It is handy for many historical sites including Cawdor Castle, Brodie Castle, Fort George and Culloden Battlefield. There are local shops in Culloden and the nearby retail parks contain 24 hour supermarkets, and all the usual collection of clothes shops, DIY, etc.
