The Scottish Highlands region
One cannot visit the Scottish Highlands and not be enchanted by the wonderful scenery which abounds! To the west of Inverness lies Glen Affric, often referred to as "the most beautiful glen in Scotland." Take your camera as there is an abundance of wildlife to see in the surrounding area including buzzards, red kite, red squirrel and the occasional pine marten.
Culloden Battlefield, steeped in history and scene of the last battle fought in Britain, has an excellent visitors' centre where you can "experience" the life and times of the people and soldiers who lived through this troubled period. Fort George at nearby Ardersier is open all year, built following the Battle of Culloden, it is one of the most outstanding artillery fortifications in Europe.
The Inverness, Highlands area
Picturesque Loch Ness is only a 30 minutes drive from Kilcoy Chalets - try to catch a glimpse of our elusive "Nessie"! Cruise boats leave Inverness hourly to take a boat trip but be sure to take your binoculars and camera because the scenery is spectacular! There are also many castles and historic buildings to visit including romantic Dunrobin Castle where you can enjoy the gardens or take a tour inside the castle itself. Sample the delights of some of the Highlands' many famous whisky distilleries - the nearest distillery is situated in Muir of Ord, only 10 minutes by car. For those energetic visitors, the mountains are not too far way. And there's plenty of good fishing and golfing nearby. A visit to the Isle of Skye takes you through some spectacular countryside including Glen Shiel with the Five Sisters of Kintail rising majestically around you. A great day out! Inverness has a new archive centre where you can discover your "roots". Plenty of fine restaurants and good shopping in Inverness make this an ideal place to visit for your short break or longer.
