The Florida / Florida Gulf Coast region
Inverness, Citrus County’s seat of government, is located along Florida's west-central coast and the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 70 miles north of Tampa and 60 miles northwest of Orlando. With a temperate climate, and a year around mean temperature of 70 ºF, it is the perfect location for every type of vacation.
With its rolling hills and crystal clear springs, rivers and lakes, it is little wonder that Citrus County has become the vacation destination of so many who want to experience the original Florida. The lovely winding Withlacoochee River borders Citrus County to the North and East. The Tsala Apopka chain of lakes (Seminole for "Good Fishing") borders Citrus County to the East. The western part of Citrus County is famous for its hundreds of islands, creeks, and the spring-fed waters as the Crystal and Homosassa Rivers flow into the Gulf of Mexico.
Its most famous natural resident is the West Indian Manatee. This endangered, and now highly protected, creature lives in the clear spring water at nearby Crystal River. Visitors can not only visit these wonderful animals but also swim with them in the crystal clear waters.
To add to this wonderful natural environment, visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities from golf to diving, from cycling to boating, plus having easy access to all the world famous Florida attractions. This is a truly great location from which to experience both the original natural Florida and the great man made attractions. Something for everyone!
Inverness, Florida area

Just as important is that, after all this adventure your luxury holiday home provides you with the perfect place to relax and enjoy less demanding pursuits.
SHOPPING: If shopping is your activity then nowhere will suit you better. In nearby Ocala a wide range of stores are available to meet every need and budget, all supported by a wide variety of family restaurants to aid recovery. An easy drive away are any number of Malls to satisfy even the most energetic and demanding shopper. In Orlando these include the Florida Mall, the Mall at Millennia and the Premium Outlets Mall. In Tampa, International Plaza & Bay Street, the Westfield Citrus Park or, for something more unusual try Channelside with its waterside collection of retailers, nightlife, and restaurants.
WATERPARKS: The Florida weather is ideal for experiencing the fun and adventure of a Water Park. Wet ‘n Wild, Blizzard Beach, Adventure Island, Typhoon Lagoon are all within easy reach. Closer still is Buccaneer Bay, at Weeki Wachee Springs, with its clear Spring Water pool.
PRO-SPORTS: Whether you want to watch the Yankees Spring training, Ice Hockey with the Tampa Bay Lightening, Basketball with the Orlando Magic or regular season baseball with the Marlins, they are accessible from your Inverness base.
CYCLING: Over 45 miles of paved cycle path provide a leisurely way to explore the area. Cycles are available to hire locally and you can then see the real Florida up close.
BOATING: If boating is your preference then the seven “Outstanding Florida Waterways” in Citrus County offer you all you could want. You can canoe/kayak, take an airboat tour, hire a boat to cruise the Gulf or even go game fishing.
DIVING & SNORKELING: With a year-round water temperature of 72ºF and superb visibility and no strong currents, Crystal River offers divers and snorkelers an experience of a lifetime, especially if you get to swim with the Manatee. Excellent diving schools are also available for beginners.
HIKING, BIRDWATCHING & FISHING: The trails through hardwood hammock, scrub, hydric swamp, sand hill, prairie and marsh provide a unique variety and also offer the opportunity to experience the wide variety of Florida bird life. For the freshwater fishing there are speckled perch in Lake Rousseau, catfish in the Withlacoochee or the ultimate southern quarry, the Florida Largemouth Bass, just about everywhere.
NATURE & BEAUTY One of the largest herds of endangered MANATEE live just a short drive away in Crystal River. You can snorkel, in the clear spring water, alongside these large friendly sea creatures, who look like they come from a different age.
Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park, located on the Homosassa River, is a showcase for native Florida wildlife and endangered species. The park is also a rehabilitation centre and refuge for the endangered West Indian Manatee. Other wildlife, seen in their natural habitat, includes alligators, crocodiles, snakes, deer, bears, bobcats, otters and cougars. Bird wildlife includes pink flamingos, eagles, herons, egrets, ducks and others. One unusual resident is a Hippopotamus, left by the previous owners of the park it was in danger until granted Florida citizenship by the Governor!
HISTORY The Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto visited Citrus County around 1539 but the first pioneers did not arrive until the 1810s. Only after the Civil War did more people move into this frontier region between the Withlacoochee River and the Gulf of Mexico.
On June 2, 1887, Florida Governor E. A. Perry signed into law a bill dividing Hernando County into three counties, Citrus to the north and Pasco to the south. However, there was a long bitter battle over whether Mannfield or Inverness should be the County Seat.
A vote in favour of Inverness did not settle things and it took a daring midnight raid, in which the courthouse and everything that had to do with County government - records, court furniture and fixtures - was taken and moved to Inverness by horses and wagons - including Captain (W.C.) Zimmerman, the County Clerk, who refused to move from his office and was picked up with his chair and desk and transported in a wagon to the new County Seat!
Inverness now boasts the Citrus County Courthouse as its centrepiece, with its traditional clock tower and copper cupola which overlooks a recently renovated downtown with ice cream shops, antique stores and cafes. For those seeking to go further back, the Crystal River State Archaeological Site contains the remains of a large Indian village and several ceremonial and burial mounds. An excellent museum has exhibits explaining the site and its former inhabitants.
