Home description
In a delightful rural setting adjacent to the Quair Water, with only the sounds of the birds and the river, this 18th century bothy is completely away from it all, yet only 27 miles from Edinburgh. Set adjacent to the original miller's house (now the owner's home), the bothy is all open-plan, rustic yet comfortable with direct access into a pretty south facing garden.
There is a menu of linear and circular walks from the doorstep, some along sections of the Southern Upland way. World class mountain biking is available at Glentress Forest 4 miles away and salmon and trout fishing is available on the River Tweed. Nesting Ospreys (in season) can be observed via CCTV from nearby Kailzie Gardens and Traquair House, the oldest inhabited house in Scotland is a five minute walk down the road. The busy market town of Peebles (6 miles) has excellent shops, restaurants and even a swimming pool and theatre.

The South/Borders region
The landscape of the Scottish Borders covering an area of 1800 square miles is characterised by green rolling hills divided by beautiful river valleys, the most famous of which is the Tweed. The river runs right through the region for nearly 160km from its source above Tweedsmuir to the sea at Berwick-upon-Tweed. The section of the Tweed Valley stretching from Melrose to Peebles is where you will find a string of attractions from the ruins of Dryburgh and Melrose Abbey to the eccentricities of Sir Walter Scott's mansion at Abbotsford and the intriguing Jacobite past of Traquair House. Along with the towns of Selkirk and Galashiels these towns form the heart of the Borders region, whose turbulent history was, until the Act of Union characterised by endless clan warfare and Reivers raids. Consequently the area is strewn with ruined castles and keeps. This turbulent past is now remembered each year by the Common Ridings in June and July . Towns like Peebles and Selkirk hold celebrations normally lasting a week which include "ride-outs" where hundreds of locals ride horses around the burgh boundaries.
Innerleithen / Traquair area
Situated 6 miles from the market town of Peebles and 1.5 miles from Innerleithen, the tiny village of Traquair lies on the Southern Upland Way and is home to Traquair House, the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland. The present owners, the Maxwell-Stuarts have lived here since 1491. The house hosts several events every year including the famous Traquair Fair : a feast of music, theatre and dance normally held on the first weekend in August. Opportunities abound for walking, fishing on the Tweed, golf at local courses in Innerleithen and Cardrona and cycling. World class mountain biking is available at Glentress Forest, 4 miles away and the extreme 7-Stanes downhill run is just half a mile down the road in Traquair Forest. For a less hair-raising time, visit Peebles with its busy and eclectic High Street. Here you will find art galleries, good restaurants like the The Sunflower, Osso & Halcyon, a museum and the wondeful Eastgate Theatre.
