The Maputo Province region
Maputo has been the capital of Mozambique since 1898. The city was previously called Lourenço Marques until the country's independence in 1975. It is the largest city in Mozambique and the country's most important harbour. It is situated at the mouth of the Santo River in the extreme south, 90 km from the border with South Africa. People are generally out and about in the streets, walking, driving and getting on with life. The vibe is healthy and active, with little begging and lots of street vendors and markets.
Casa Dunas is located on the Machangulo penninsula about 34km's east of Maputo. It is part of a low-density development spread over 20 km's of exquisite beachfront, fully serviced with roads, driveways, electricity and water.
Inhaca Island is a small-inhabited island, lying just 37 km off the Mozambican capital of Maputo and positioned at the entrance to Delagoa Bay. It's location to Casa Dunas is excellent - the island itself is seperated from the main penninsula by "Hells Gate" - a channel that feeds the greater Maputo Bay.
The island also features large areas of unspoiled evergreen forest and bush land. Large areas of its land and shores have been protected as natural reserve since 1976, providing a unique and pristine environment, which can be enjoyed by taking one of the excellent two- to three-day hiking trails that are available for the avid walker.
All told, Inhaca has some 100 km of coastline, much of it having some of the best coral reefs in the Mozambique Channel. Snorkeling conditions in the inshore bay areas are excellent for novices and, while visibility may not be as good as it is on the offshore reefs, marine life is plentiful.
Situated just to the northwest of Inhaca Island is another smaller island called Portuguese Island. You can amble across the narrow strait when the tide is low, snorkel in the enclosed lagoon, or be even more adventurous and venture out further towards the reef with flippers, snorkel and mask. However, only do so when the water is clear, since there are sharks in the deeper waters of both these islands.

"A wonderful week at Casa Dunas"
A beautiful house in a stunning setting - there can be very few places on the planet where you can have the Indian ocean all to yourselves. The house is beautifully decorated and efficiently maintained by Enosse the housekeeper. We loved the freedom of walking five minutes from the property and having the rock pools to explore one day and walking five minutes in the opposite direction the next day and having the Indian Ocean "aquarium" to snorkel in. A highlight from our week was the trip across to Inhaca Island by Dhow and snorkeling at the marine reserve. All five members of the family had a wonderful time and we've come back all suitably relaxed and would love to visit again in the future.

Casa Dunas is definitely a piece if Paradise, in a totally unspoilt part of the Mozambique coastline. The accommodation is excellent and the staff are extremely helpful and proud of the standards they maintain. The views from the bedrooms, living areas and deck are amazing, with whales, dolphins and turtles often being spotted. The walks along the pristine beach are wonderful, and the rock pools contain some beautiful sea life . The nearby fishing village of Santa Maria offers a wonderful look at the lives of the local people. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get away from city life and recharge their batteries!

"An amazing property in a unique location"
There are few places left in the world where you can relax in a luxurious property in a true unspoilt natural wilderness. It is amazing how isolated and unspoilt the area is considering it us just a convenient short hop from Maputo, The sea is alive with fish of all sizes (someone caught a 35Kg fish of the shore during our stay), turtles and whales. There is an amazing 50m long rock pool just 3mins walk up the beach which is safe and fun to swim or snorkel in at low tide. There are an amazing variety of birds including fish eagles. The forest along the coast hosts little antelope and monkeys too. .A short 4x4 drive to the neighbouring Maputo reserve offers the chance of viewing hippos, crocs, elephants, zebra, giraffe and several types of antelope. The staff at the lodge are really friendly and helpful. Nothing seemed to much trouble to them. I only wish I could stay longer.
