Recent renovations guarantee you the newest and finest, stylish, contemporary-within-medieval holiday home experience. Endless walks in breathtaking beauty; and sea (not too far) and river, pools and lakes bathing possibilities galore. The palace was once home to a silent movie heroine & to a Napoleonic general! Amongst other former famous residents & guests are a French ambassador, an Antarctic Territory governor, and the sole survivor of local Middle Ages witch trials, a noble woman of royal descent! Now you have the chance to holiday in style in their former home, maybe in "The Palace Sanctuary", once part of a convent chapter-house; or in "The Cloisters", formerly a French ambassador's holiday home. For 2-4 The Cloisters is ideal, with its 3 bedrooms. For 1-2, The Sanctuary is an affordable but special, snug retreat. For more people it is easy - just add them together and you have space for 6 , with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.

The citadel of Triora is officially acknowledged as 1-of-the-100 most beautiful that Italy has to offer. It is a marvelous mountain retreat, a romantic escape & an historical holiday spot, yet it is only 35-40 minutes from the sea!

The peaceful location of the palace, Triora, is located above its twin-village, Molini-di-Triora, a borgo consisting of of 23 watermills! Triora itself boasts 3 medieval palaces; the remains of 5 castles; many, many churches & chapels, and it is located above the confluence of 3 river valleys, which meander amidst mountain peaks. It's an ideal & quiet & relaxing spot for contemplation, writing or painting; for mountain walks, river valley strolls; for mountain-biking, climbing; for swimming and bathing in nearby cascading rivers and freshwater pools; for nearby beaches along the Riviera; for visiting the many local historic sites, from neolithic to wartime; and for dining at many excellent local restaurants. Serenity & tranquility are rare treats these days but you will usually enjoy both here.

However, we cannot 100% guarantee that a local will not spring a late-night birthday party;

nor that the local council will not have arranged a town-fair, with night-time activities;

nor that someone will not start a lawn-mower, or a tractor; nor that a TV or conversation won't be heard;

nor that a cock will not crow, neither a dog will not bark, nor a donkey bray.

Silence is not guaranteed but it's usually very quiet here.

OWNED & RUN BY A NORTHERN EUROPEAN COUPLE who were the first non-locals to move here, after buying a property well over 10 years ago. We know more about Triora than any other non-local! We have been here for longer than other non-Italians, of whom there are some, though not many, so you will not find yourself in yet another English colony abroad. We have developed and sold property here. We know how to make a house a home, so you are assured of a warm welcome.

We speak : English, Norsk, Dansk, Svensk, Francais, Italiano.

Free WIFI, Free British Satellite TV

The North West Italy region

The locale is generally the warmest place in Italy, after Sicily, during the winter months, due to the protecting veil offered by the gorgeous Maritime(Sea) Alps, which separate us from France (here you get two countries for the price of one!)

Triora sits at the heart of Italy's latest national park, which stretches over a massive swathe of Ligurian and Piedmontese lands and mountains. From its centre, Triora, the cities of Monte Carlo, Nice, Genoa and San Remo are easy to reach. So too are hundreds of seaside and mountain towns and villages, all with restaurants and bars serving the tastiest of local, often esoteric culinary delights.

3 palaces, 5 castles and 16 churches testify to Triora's great past. Once upon a time it was solely a royal's and noble's principality! It's been in many countries, through many wars, it's been pagan, Christian, rich, poor, occitanian, Roman, Genovese, Napoleonic ... but it's always been stunningly beautiful!

Factually Triora is in the least polluted valley system in all of Italy! The air and water are pure. There is little in the way of noise or real pollution. In summer it's temporate climate affords locals and guests a great deal of comfort. It mostly stays at a bearable heat level! It sits above 3 cascading and torrential river valleys but it's far enough above all of the rivers to remain mostly mosquito-free in summer, unlike many water-side and valley holiday spots.

Tango lessons available!! Dance the tango and improve your skills while holidaying at the property, please feel free to ask about what is available.

"Sublime Italian mountain retreat!"

We rented the two apartments the Cloisters and the Sanctuary for a week in July/August between two couples. I don't think there are enough superlatives to describe this unique property in the stu… More

"Great location. Highly recommended. We'll be back..."

We would thoroughly recommend this as a holiday destination. The owners are very friendly, kind and helpful and we got a very warm welcome. Prior to our arrival we had various communications with them and they really helped to make everything simple and straightforward. Thanks.

The property has been very carefully and tastefully restored to a high standard and they have obviously put a lot of thought into making sure that you have everything you will need for your stay. We have stayed in quite a few properties over the years and this is certainly one of the best.

Triora, with its narrow little cobbled streets, is a lovely little town to explore and has a very colourful history. There are lots of walks that you can take and they all reward you with beautiful views across the surrounding mountains and villages. The coastal resorts like San Remo are just a drive away, so you can enjoy the delights of the Italian Riviera too.

Overall, this was a lovely place to stay and we had a thoroughly enjoyable time.

Many thanks to you, dear guests, for choosing us, and for appreciating the very discreet charms of the mysterious mountain citadel of Triora, a quite particular medieval marvel. Thanks too for your very nice compliments about The Palace Sanctuary, where you stayed. See you next year, or another time, we hope. It was a pleasure meeting you and seeing you enjoying yourselves in and around the town.

What a pleasant surprise it was to find it when we visited this website to update a page. Hope to see you again, you could try one of the other apartments next time, we have three altogether, as you may remember . . . and if not one of our medieval palazzo lets in Triora, why not try our "British Ambassador's holiday home" in belle epoque Palais Lutetia, in Menton, by the sea! Very best wishes to you, and Happy New Year for '12!

Dearest Janice, how lovely to hear from you in this way! It's always a pleasure to see a new positive review on TripAdvisor, from guests we remember so well and so fondly. We have very nice memories of meeting you, and we hope we see you again, another year. Remember, we not only have another two, very different apartments here, in the medieval palace, but we also have the British Ambassador's former holiday home in 'The Pearl of France' : Menton. Until we meet again ... & have a great 2012! Very best wishes, J&J.

Dear Bill & Peggy, it was delightful meeting you - and a pleasure to read your review, which just about says it all about your stay in "The Sanctuary", one of our four palace apartments in the medieval palazzo that we restored in Triora, an amazing beauty-spot, with mountains and sea, and numerous nearby attractions - of which you enjoyed but some. It was a pity we had to say goodbye after just 1 week but we hope that we may meet again sometime ... should you ever wish to try out one of the other apartments, we would be delighted to welcome you back here. Merry Xmas from us all, palace pussycats included : J&J, C&V, Poindexter - and Goggsley & Pelly.

Dear valued guests,
Thank you so much for your very positive review of our palace holiday homes - vacation rentals with a difference! We fondly recollect your stay and we hope to welcome you back one day (maybe also to our belle epoque holiday home apartment in the splendid Palais Lutetia, in nearby Menton, on the Cote d'Azur, which is only 1 hour from Triora ...more details on our site at

You so aptly and accurately described the delights of holidaying in Triora, and staying at our medieval palace, that were we not already in situ, we should feel like going on holiday there ourselves!

It's nice to hear that the staff did a good job whilst you were on holiday. Commendations for such very fine property managers, as they are, are often bestowed, and we shall pass on your compliments to them. Very best wishes, until next time (and have a super Xmas and a Great 2012!), all of us in Triora!

Dear guests, we would like to thank you so much for your sincere review which was full of good will yet wholly accurate from a neutral standpoint, from guests whom we had not previously known, nor from whom had we ever induced a review. The managers noted that it was a pleasure to have you here, and thank you for your kind mention and best wishes. Even though the weather was not at its best the week you were here (it has been dry ever since & we are in need of some rain soon) we are happy to read that you managed to enjoy yourselves and relax fully, which is the best thing for us to hear. You are right - with the beaches only 40 minutes away, it is possible to totally change scene - mountains for sea - in well under 1 hour drive, which is one of the unusual and most valuable aspects of holidaying here : having two options of scene available in half an hour of each other. We hope you can come back next year or thereafter, and to try a different apartment, either the grander "Cloisters", with the vaulted medieval terrace; or the sun-trap loft-style "Penthouse" up top. We thank you for your very positive review and hope to meet you again, John and Jayne Allen.
