The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
Bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the east and the Pyrenean Mountains to the south, the area benefits from a Mediterranean Climate. There is plenty to see and do in the area. For the active there are of course the Pyrenees and plentiful walking opportunities. Or if you prefer lazy days on the beach then this is possible too, with the sea just half an hour drive from the house!
This is an area rich in both culture and beauty (natural and manmade!). Ancient cities and towns, such as Carcssonne, Perpignan, Villefranche- de- conflent and Collioure, with their stunning architecture are waiting to be explored, as are the many picturesque villages scattered throughout the region eg Eus ,Castlenous, and Mosset. The region is noted for its mountain fortresses (popularly known as Cathar Castles), such as Cacassonne which are not to be missed. Abbeys and cathedrals, châteaux and monasteries make up the unique landscape.
Thermal springs and spas, rivers and lakes and of course the famed vineyards all contribute to the region's natural charm. Not to mention the National and wildlife reserves ready to be discovered. This really is the ideal holiday location!
