About this location
The Devon region
Ilfracombe is steeped in history as its natural harbour on the Bristol Channel has been a major trading route between England and Wales, There is no need for a car as there are a number of attractions within walking distance including the award-winning Ilfracombe Aquarium, the unique Tunnels Beaches, fascinating Ilfracombe Museum, Larkstone Leisure Park, Hele Cornmill and Chambercombe Manor, one of Britain's most haunted houses. With an abudence of wildlife we recommend a wildlife boat trip, the day trip to Lundy and crabbing in rock pools.
The landmark theatre forms the heart of the many events and festival throughout the year, details of which can be found on the North Devon tourist website.
There are many fine and award winning beaches, from secluded coves to the wide stretches of golden sand with crashing surf. For a unique beach experience visit 'The Tunnels' in Ilfracombe, holders of a blue flag and seaside award or Hele Bay to the east of the town also award winners, for good bathing and rock pool exploring.
ilfracombe-bandstand-night is an absolute must, dont forget your picnic. You will find plenty to do in and around Ilfracombe with a terrific range of activities available to suit all tastes including walking, clay pigeon shooting, fishing, horse riding, cycling, surfing, walking, sub-aqua diving or simply exploring.
A short distance from the centre of Ilfracombe by car or bus are the spectacular golden sandy beaches and dunes of Woolacombe, Croyde Bay and Saunton Sands. The whole area is a mecca for surfing and is a children's paradise, where they will amuse themselves safely for hours building sandcastles, flying kites or playing in the shallow breakers.
Ilfracombe is ideally situated for you to explore the spectacular coastline and the delightful moorland reaches of Exmoor with its rolling hills and quaint villages; the unique twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth connected by a cliff top railway, Combe Martin on the edge of the national park and right into Lorna Doone country.
To the West are the beautiful Hartland Peninsula and the market town of Bideford. On the coast and Estuary you will find Appledore, Westward Ho! and Clovelly, one of the last feudal villages.
South of Ilfracombe is Barnstaple with its famous Pannier Market and Butchers Row. Here you will find a mixture of recognisable shop chains and independent retailers. Further South and you come to Torrington, a quaint Devon town with cream teas galore.
