The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

Linked to La Rochelle by a stunning bridge, the Ile de Ré with its unique Atlantic Ocean micro-climate benefits from a high rate of sunshine, equal to that of the Côte d’Azur. The Ile de Ré is made up of ten unspoilt villages maintained in the local architectural tradition and the island fiercely conserves the fragile beauty of the 70 kilometres of coast.
Each village has its own character and has something to offer every taste - from luxury spas, fabulous restaurants and chic shops to the simpler pleasures of the local markets, freshly caught fish and organic produce. The houses and the streets follow the traditional 'Retais' decor: whitewashed walls, green shutters and winding lanes lined with hollyhocks, the island's emblematic flower.
The Ile de Ré is crisscrossed with 110 Km of cycle paths that allow you to discover the 10 villages, the beaches, the woodland, the salt marshes…making this island a uniquely peaceful and relaxing holiday destination. By far the best way to discover the island, the cycle paths are flat and easy to follow and bicycle hire for all levels is available everywhere.
The waters around the Ile de Ré are a haven for watersports enthusiasts – windsurfing, sailing and safe bathing are to be found on the sandy southern coastline. In the north, the Fier d’Ars-en-Ré is a patchwork of mudflats and salt marshes, where a variety of waterfowl and birds of prey is to be found. The flat-bottomed boats, the salt-gatherer huts, the oyster beds and the wild moorland give the Ile de Ré a romantic beauty all of its own.
If you want to venture further afield, La Rochelle has a mediaeval fortified centre with a famous aquarium and France's largest Zoo, La Palmyre, is located further down the coastine. The lovely beaches around Royan, the idyllic estuary of the Charente or the northern Bordeaux vineyards are also worth a day trip.
The Ile de Re / Le Bois area
Le Bois is a typical Ile de Ré village with its narrow winding lanes lined with flowers, fine restaurants and charming cafés. At its heart is the town square with quaint shops and the island's best indoor and outdoor market which is open all year round. The safe, sandy beaches offer great watersports for children just learning to swim or sail, as well as more adventurous pursuits for windsurfers and kitesurfers. Other activities such as horseriding, tennis and of course cycling are all available in Le Bois.
The village of Le Bois Plage en Ré is situated on the south west coast of the Island, running along 4 kms of sandy beaches and surrounded by wooded countryside. The town itself is 5 minutes from St. Martin, the island's capital, filled with brocantes, fashionable boutiques, lively bars and quayside restaurants.

"We had a wonderful time in Ile de Re and will definitely be back! Your house was fantastic – the location, lovely and comfortable and with such a well equipped kitchen! We couldn’t have asked for better weather, the boys were on the beach every day only leaving as it started to get dark. It made it all very easy for us."
Audrey, Stuart and Family, Autumn Half-Term 2009
"We couldn’t have asked for a nicer place to stay – we loved everything, had wonderful nights in the courtyard with barbequed meat and fish from the market, and enjoyed spending the days cycling around the island. The concierge service was also very helpful.
Cheers again, we will long remember our few days there!"
Sam, Belinda and Family, October 2009
"Just thought we would drop you a note to say what a marvellous time we had at Les Voiles last week during our stay.We have not been to to Il de Re before and found the island to be truly delightful and staying in Les Voiles made the experience all the more enjoyable."
Jacqui, Tony and Harry, September 2009
“After a long car journey we arrived at Les Voiles to discover a little gem of a house hidden away off the main road (if you can call it that!). The interiors were like something out of a homes and garden magazine, but homely with all the creature comforts you could possibly need. We loved our week at Les Voiles – it was so quiet we managed to sleep in every morning. A welcome relief to the frenetic life we lead in London!
We would highly recommend this to anyone. Just hope we can get a booking next year!”
Camilla, Paul and Gabriella - August 2009
"Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Les Voiles. The property is superb, tastefully decorated with great attention to detail both aesthetically and practically with all the quality appliances and utensils needed for a stress free break. We very much enjoyed the island and had excellent meals at the restaurants you recommended, so thank you for your helpful and attentive communications and we look forward to staying at Les Voiles in the future."
Anne, Andrew and Family - July 2009
"Just wanted to say thank you so much for the use of your lovely lovely house we had a really great holiday and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We were very comfortable in the house and you thought of everything! Many thanks also for your great recommendations everything was just as you indicated, it was a real help to have the information to hand.
Ile de Re was so beautiful easy and relaxed. We have come home certainly fitter after the cycling but totally chilled, and our only regret was that we could not stay longer. Overall we had a wonderful holiday and there is no doubt we will be back again. We will definitely be recommending it and your beautiful house to all our friends and family."
Miriam, Des and Family, June 2009.
