Home description

The house is 10 years old and is great for families. It has one double bed, and two large bunks beds. In addition to this there is a portable baby cot, and pull out sofa bed. The closest beach is at the end of the road, which stretches all the way to the lighthouse. There are a wide selection of bike trails from Ars En Re, and bicycles (including baby seats) are included with the house. There is a parking space located outside the house.

The house is simple in its nature, but full of light, and not contained with expensive breakable items. The swimming pool, with a swipe card access, has a children's paddling pool in addition to the 25 meter pool.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

The climate is generally 5 or 10 degrees hotter than the UK. It is half way down the Atlantic coast, and boasts more sunshine hours than St Tropez! The perfect holiday is a cycling and beach holiday, with fresh food and villages to discover. On wet weather days, La Rochelle is a car ride away, but has a very good aquarium and historic port. Bordeaux and Cognac is an easy day trip away.

Ile de Re / Ars en Re area

Ars, the first yachting harbour of the island, is a very charming yet simple village. Not far from it, the region features beaches and a wild coast. As it is the case almost everywhere on the island, agriculture is based on vineyards, vegetable gardens and cereals.

Salt farming and oyster farming are important activities..

How to get there

Flying to La Rochelle/Ile De Re airport (5km from island):

Easyjet - London Gatwick and Bristol
Ryanair - London Stanstad and Dublin
Flybe - Birmingham and Southampton

there is no direct bus from the airport to the island (taxi's are 40 euros to Ars) - but there is a bus into La Rochelle and then to the island. I have walked it!

Boat - these days a more charming route (and worth upgrading to a superior cabin - Brittany Ferries)

St Malo - 220 miles 4hr20mins
Cherbourg - 307 miles 5hrs 20mins
Boulogne - 430 miles 7hr

Rail - Paris TGV to La Rochelle 3hrs

Children can cycle and roam around the Clos at ease.

The Thalascape hotel, for massage and beauty treatments is next door to the Clos, and can be accessed via the swimming pool.

Further details outdoors:
Families and couples have all enjoyed the house. The local restaurant 'Aux Freres De La Cote' is on the beach, and a bit of a famous institution for returning holidaymakers. Ars En Re is a stunning village, boasting a central square, a large market, and port. Exploring the top of the island, St Clement and Les Portes is only a gentle ride through the salt fields and nature reserves. It is easily possible to holiday without a car here.
