The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

The department of Charente-Maritime is situated on the west coast of France between Nantes and Bordeaux. Beautiful sandy beaches line the coast and the area is famous for its oyster farms and salt flats. The historic port of La Rochelle lies at the centre of the department and is the access point for the Ile de Ré.

The Ile de Ré is a beautiful island just off the coast of La Rochelle which has managed to keep much of its authentic character. It is dotted with nature reserves where multitudes of wild birds and animals live, protected from the advance of technology and mankind. The island is famous for its salt, which is collected by salters towards the western end of the island, its oysters and its potatoes, all of which you can enjoy in the many restaurants scattered throughout the island’s villages.

The waters around the Ile de Ré are loved by all watersports enthusiasts – windsurfers, yachtsmen and all sailors. The Atlantic Ocean is much less dangerous here than in other areas of the mainland coast so bathing is recommended for all.

To make your way around the island, get yourself a bike – it is by far the easiest and healthiest way to travel. There are more than 60 miles of specially adapted cycle paths which link all the main villages and beaches. In addition, the island is exceptionally flat so hard work is kept to a minimum. You can hire bikes, child seats, carriages - you name it, from the multitude of rental shops throughout the island.

Ile de Re / Sainte-Marie area

Sainte-Marie is the first village you’ll come to when taking the south route around the island. It has managed to maintain its rural identity and is home to many oyster farmers and wine growers.

Easily recognisable from afar thanks to its superb gothic church tower, Sainte-Marie offers a range of activities to visitors: bathing, surfing at Les Grenettes, walks on foot or cycling along the wild coastline or through moorland and vineyards.

In 2002, the village became a Green Holiday Resort and is an ideal spot to recover from city life in a family oriented ambiance, either alone or with friends.

“Two faces, one village” is the motto of Sainte-Marie, host to a number of festivals, two markets, flea markets, long rambling footpaths and numerous cycle paths. What is surprising is that this small village is 5km long, stretching from the renowned seawater treatment centre to the east, to the Grenettes area to the west, passing by the church square, the market square of Place d’Antioche and through the Tilleuls square with its restaurants and various shops.

The transition from the rural landscapes of the vineyards and bramble filled moors to the seascapes of medieval fish locks which trapped the fish as the tide went out, and low water rock shelves is seamless.

In a nutshell, Sainte-Marie provides a perfect holiday home backdrop for those who enjoy living in the country and long rambles through the vineyards to those who prefer the more urban attractions of La Flotte or Saint-Martin.
