The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

The department of Charente-Maritime is situated on the west coast of France between Nantes and Bordeaux. Beautiful sandy beaches line the coast and the area is famous for its oyster farms and salt flats. The historic port of La Rochelle lies at the centre of the department and is the access point for the Ile de Ré.

The Ile de Ré is a beautiful island just off the coast of La Rochelle which has managed to keep much of its authentic character. It is dotted with nature reserves where multitudes of wild birds and animals live, protected from the advance of technology and mankind. The island is famous for its salt, which is collected by salters towards the western end of the island, its oysters and its potatoes, all of which you can enjoy in the many restaurants scattered throughout the island’s villages.

The waters around the Ile de Ré are loved by all watersports enthusiasts – windsurfers, yachtsmen and all sailors. The Atlantic Ocean is much less dangerous here than in other areas of the mainland coast so bathing is recommended for all.

To make your way around the island, get yourself a bike – it is by far the easiest and healthiest way to travel. There are more than 60 miles of specially adapted cycle paths which link all the main villages and beaches. In addition, the island is exceptionally flat so hard work is kept to a minimum. You can hire bikes, child seats, carriages - you name it, from the multitude of rental shops throughout the island.

Ile de Re / Sainte-Marie area

Dressed in vines and marsh plantations, Sainte-Marie-de-Ré is the most agricultural community on the island, but no less maritime for all that. Excellent shellfish hunting is to be had on the expanse of sand revealed by the retreating tide, and the town’s old fish traps are carefully looked after. The village of Sainte-Marie where Le Courlis cottage is situated has a particularly lively market in the summer.Beyond the centre of the village, you can wander through typical Ré alleyways, dotted with holly hocks and lined with terraced cottages, with their green, blue and grey shutters.

La Flotte is ideally situated for holidays which combine lazy days on the golden beaches on the south side of the island and outings to the many typical villages and their markets.

By train to La Rochelle
Daily trains to Nantes, Bordeaux, and Paris Montparnasse (TGV). Paris-La Rochelle takes a little less than 3 hours. You can then take a bus (Ré bus) from the station of La Rochelle (it goes through all the villages).

Where the bike is king...
On the Ile de Ré, it is not necessary to have a car thanks to more than 60 miles of specially created and signposted cycle paths.
