The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

Vendee is a large department in the Poitou region of France, situated on the Atlantic coast, south of Brittany and Nantes, and north of La Rochelle and Bordeaux, and the name "Vendée" is taken from a river which runs through the south-east of the département.

Its position, within 2 to 6 hours of the various ferry ports, makes the area an easy day's journey from Britain and Ireland. It has some 150 kilometres of mainly sandy beaches which give good conditions for water sports as well as just enjoying the sunshine. According to the 1999 census, the population is around 540,000.

Ile de Re area

A half-hour drive west from La Rochelle, the Île de Ré is a low, narrow island some 30km long, fringed by sandy beaches to the southwest and salt marshes and oyster beds to the northeast, it is a delightful village, built up around its harbour and protected by ramparts.

At the heart of the village, the harbour is still the focal point sheltering fishing boats and yachts and is a key place to stop at and visit for all holiday makers visiting the island. The citadel, fortifications, museums as well as the streets and alleys are all treasures of the Ile de Ré heritage. The Island is also home to 80 km of cycling lanes all over the island.

- Saint-Martin is a village with exceptional charm built around its harbour and protected by Vauban ramparts.
- Places to visit: Saint Martin’s harbour, but also Saint Martin with its small streets, wells and 17th century architecture.
- The Gothic Church (the Grand-Fort ruins), the fortifications built by Vauban, the citadel, L’Hôtel de Clerjotte dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, the former arsenal on the fortified square and its Ernest Cognaq Ile de Ré Museum. Arts and crafts: jewellery, fine glassware and silk painting.

To discover in the surrounding area:
- On the Ile de Ré: its dune-lined beaches, small villages, highly attractive harbours, its forest and numerous features to be explored by bicycle or on horseback.
- Loix (11 km) is part of one of Ile de Ré’s largest oyster-farms.
- Rivedoux (11 km) and its small, picturesque oyster-farming port.
- Sainte-Marie (8.5 km) with its streets, alleys and vineyard paths. The best way of enjoying these areas of freedom is on bicycle.
- L’Arche de Noé, this big attraction centre on the Ile de Ré is an ornithological reserve and animal specialist, not far from La Rochelle (20 km): scenes representing sea adventures, the museum of shells, butterflies and insects, the oceanographic museum, natural wonders from around the world, a centre for the breeding of domestic animals, the natural wonders of the island’s birdlife, the history of the island’s prison, the music centre with organ and synthesiser concerts, the floral garden and the jungle of parrots.
