The Ile de Re / Sainte-Marie area
The Ile de Ré is a beautiful island just off the coast of La Rochelle which has managed to keep much of its authentic character. . The island is famous for its salt, which is collected by salters towards the western end of the island, its oysters and its potatoes, all of which you can enjoy in the many restaurants scattered throughout the island’s villages.It is dotted with nature reserves where multitudes of wild birds and animals live, protected from the advance of technology and mankind.
To discover within the resort:
- Saint-Martin is a village with exceptional charm built around its harbour and protected by Vauban ramparts.
- Places to visit: Saint Martin’s harbour, but also Saint Martin with its small streets, wells and 17th century architecture.
- The Gothic Church (the Grand-Fort ruins), the fortifications built by Vauban, the citadel, L’Hôtel de Clerjotte dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, the former arsenal on the fortified square and its Ernest Cognaq Ile de Ré Museum. Arts and crafts: jewellery, fine glassware and silk painting.

Wonderful accomodation and very helpful owners who were there to greet us. Alain picked us up from the airport and left us back. House was spotless and exactly as described. open the front electric gates and there was the market square and market every single day, yet no noise whatsoever. Fresh fish, vegetables, bread, great bistro etc. everything you could want right outside the door Lovely garden with flowers, jacussi and sauna. |
