The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
With its 460 kilometres of coastline, its long period of sunshine and its important historic heritage, Charente Maritime seduces both the relaxation enthusiast and the adventurer. The sweetness of the climate along with the beautiful fine sand beaches, the various activities proposed by the sea resorts, the oyster pond of Marennes-Oleron, the charentaise islands, the cities with multiple architectural wealth, the Roman churches and the gastronomic specialities will amaze all the visitors.
The economy of Charente-Maritime is based on three major sectors: tourism, maritime industry, and manufacturing. Cognac and Pineau are two of the major agricultural products.
During the summer months, families flock from all over Europe to bask in the sun and enjoy the local seafood. Charente-Maritime is the headquarters of the major oyster producer Marennes-Oléron. Oysters cultivated here are shipped across Europe.
Rochefort is the site of shipbuilding and a French naval base.
La Rochelle is a seat of major French industry. Just outside the city is a factory for the French engineering giant Alstom, where the TGV, the cars for the Paris and other metros are manufactured. La Rochelle is a very popular venue for tourism, with its picturesque medieval harbour and city walls.
Ile de Re / Le Bois area
The island of Re stretches out over 30 km, from Sablanceaux to the lighthouse, Phare des Baleines. Its geography is, in fact, partly due to the work of nature and partly due to the conservation work carried out by man for the consolidation of four islands. Re, closer to the mainland, is the largest, Loix is a peninsula away from the main axis and is isolated by salt marshes.Ars is linked to Ré by the channel of Martray, only a hundred metres wide. Les Portes peninsula, with the woods of Trousse-Chemise, is at the end of the island.
LE BOIS-PLAGE, literally meaning "the Wood Beach in Ré", is a typical village of Re with a very much appreciated town centre. It has a large seaside of 7 kms with a south facing beaches. The sandy beaches are here, you will also find the "Sailing School ". Picnics at sundown on the beach are just wonderful and a good tip for family or lovers.
If you fancy horse riding, you can take lessons at the centre or ride on the beaches. The surroundings are especially peaceful and quiet.
The Triangle La Couarde, St Martin, Le Bois Plage offers a good display off "Smart Boutiques", nightlife, pubs, restaurants, cafes, and ice cream parlours. There is also the Jazz en Ré Festival at St Martin, a typical pleasant harbour, known as the "St Tropez of the Atlantic coast".
Summer Music concerts are given all over Ile de Re. There are art exhibitions, galleries, and even writers are invited to autograph here and there. You might even recognize famous people!
