The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region

The Poitou-Charentes and Vendée regions are beloved by holiday makers – and for good reason: they have plenty of sunshine, beautiful and varied countryside, and good local food and wine. The area has a wide range of landscapes, from the marshes of the Vendée and northern Charante-Maritime to the rolling countryside of the Charentes, and of course the many miles of beautiful coastline that the regions are famous for, as well as one of the highest numbers of hours of sunshine per year in France. The region is not just well-loved for its landscapes and climate however, but also due to the wealth of local culture and traditions celebrated each year in villages across the region. Visitor attractions include Puy du Fou, celebrating France in the Middle Ages, and the sci-fi-themed Futuroscope; Poitiers, Cognac and Saintes are all full of things to see and do should you want to drive around, but La Rochelle and the Ile de Ré have many museums and other sights of their own.

Ile de Re

The island has been very popular with French visitors for some time but is now popular with British holidaymakers too, as well as a few celebrities such as . There are ten villages, each with a distinct character, spanning from the eastern end to the western tip of the island. Ré is a haven for keen cyclists, thanks to an extensive, signposted cycle track network (many cycle tracks are reserved for cyclists) as well as the island's easy terrain. The island landscape is varied: pine forests, salt marshes (the island's fleur du sel salt is renowned for its quality), vineyards (there are several local wines to choose from), and of course a large selection of beaches, with one or more at almost every village. Each village has a good selection of restaurants and shops, especially in La Flotte, le Bois Plage and Saint-Martin. Activities include watersports (there are several sailing schools), horse riding, golf and tennis, and, of course, boules. Or if you'd prefer to relax, La Flotte has a thalassotherapy centre five or six minutes' walk from the house.
