A very interesting island with many bike paths, some next to the sea. Carefully protected from over-construction.
Big and safe beaches, some naturists. Many good restaurants available and good shopping.
Saint Martin has an interesting history and became the antipode of St. Tropez. (healthy, outdoor and relaxed)The house has been decorated with taste.

The city of Cognac is not far awayand Saintes has Roman ruins and a medieval church .La Rochelle is an ancient slave - harbour. La Rochelle has an important aquarium and the biggest sailing boat harbour of Europe. There are guided tours to visit the beautiful houses of the 17th and 18th century.To go to Ile de Ré from La Rochelle takes two minutes by he bridge over the sea. The department of Vendée is very near, has many historical castles to visit. The castle of the "Puy du fou" offers the most fantastic show "sound and light" who tells the story of the french revolution...

Ile de Re / St Martin area

Saint Martin has all around the island beautiful beaches. Many bicycles paths. A wild bird sanctuary. There exist 12 villages on the island, of which 3 with a small harbour.Saint Martin has an agreable and sunny climat. In July the temperature is between 20 and 30 degrees. The city has been walled in by the architect Vauban in the 17 century. There are still many noble homes to admire. The region is full of variety. Ile de Re has become the mecca of the health interested visitors. There are many spa's available, they run from very luxurious 4 stars luxe (Richelieu) to 3 starts (Atalante) The cycling paths around the island are of great interest and beauty as they are next to the sea (very often) and away from the main routes. There are very many safe sandy beaches, some naturist. It is wonderful to go by bike to the beach among the vines, which produces the famous pineau, an interesting aperitive with cognac. One will not find transats on the beaches and no coffee shops or ice cream sellers. There exists ,even in the summer months, beaches with few people.on it. Ile de Re has become quite fashionable and one finds many great restaurants. It is forbidden to built more than one floor buildings on the island and the little cobble streets with an abundance of flowers will charm your holidays.

By TGV to La Rochelle via Paris: paris - La Rochelle 3 hours, bus or taxi from La Rochelle to Ile de Re
By car: Paris - Ile de Re about 4 and a half hours
