Home description
The house is situated on the south side of ile de Re,with the majority of the beaches. It is between the quiet villages of St Marie and La Noue, both of which have pleasant restaurants and cafes. The easiest way to get around is by bicycle, fortunately it is flat and there are cycle paths that criss-cross the island; so even the weakest cyclist will find it easy. A cycle hire shop is at St Marie (200m away). The house is in a group of holiday houses with its own secluded walled garden that catches the sun most of the day. The beaches to the south are 800m away (5 minutes by bike) and have sandy stretches and rock pools for the more adventurous. The temperatures are usually in the mid to late 20's (degrees Celcius) in early summer and get into the mid 30's in August, however there is always a pleasant sea breeze. The atmosphere is slow and tranquil, it is the perfect place to unwind, to eat excellent food and sun bathe, or slowly cycle around and explore the island and its interesting towns and beaches. If you are interested in wild-life, it is an lovely place for bird watching. There are excellent wind surfing and sailing courses at most beaches (La Couarde, Les Bois Plage) that cater for the beginner up to the expert.. In short it is a place to holiday and take life at a leisurely pace; you can lay in the sun or explore, you can eat at good restaurants or cook fresh sea food for yourself.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
The south western French coast is unique in its geographical situation. It has a recognised microclimate with more than 2300 hours of sun per year. In this region, nature and sport are inseparable. Everything is centred around the outdoors, such as walking, horse-riding, or riding a bike on the many cycle track networks. This is also a paradise for surfers who come from all over the world to test their sporting skills. Bordeaux, is the regional capital of Aquitaine, and the most renowned vineyards such as Médoc, St Émilion, Graves and Sauternes are all nearby. This region is renowned throughout the world for its food and wine.
Ile de Re / Sainte-Marie area
Situated at less than 3km from La Rochelle, the island of Ile de Re benefits from a high annual rate of sunshine hours, equal to the Côte d’Azur. Ile de Re is composed of ten villages, which follow the typical regional architectural tradition. It has over 70 kilometres of coast. It is regarded as a French island paradise. The houses have typically white washed walls, with green shutters and colourful hollyhocks. The island has 87 km of cycling paths which allow visitors of all ages to discover the villages, beaches, woodland and marshes. The main towns are the harbours of La Flotte and St Martin which are both to the north of the Island, the south and west of the island benefits from long expanses of sandy beaches. The beach of La Conche is perhaps the most beautiful, and well worth a visit. The quiet villages of St Marie and La Noue offer the typical french village square with several restaurants, and small shops, each, obviously with its own bakery.
How to get there
Ile de Re is an island off the West Coast of France, alongside La Rochelle. You can get there by plane, La Rochelle has an airport which receives flights directly from Stanstead, Birmingham, and more recently Manchester. Ryan Air fly from Stanstead, FlyBe from Manchester. You can hire a car at La Rochelle airport using Eurocar, Hertz etc, -however you may find it easier to not hire a car at all, -simply take a taxi from the airport directly to the house and then hire bicycles for your holiday (because those are all that you really need on the island). You can or course, travel there using connecting flights from any airport.. You can also drive using a channel crossing from Portsmouth to St Malo, using Brittany Ferries (high quality overnight accommodation and restaurants on board) with a 3 hour drive due south to La Rochelle the next day. You can also take the chunnel, and cut across France and make more of a holiday of it.
