With the sunniest climate in Western France, this area is one of the most unspoilt in the country. The Atlantic coast has gentle sandy beaches, with bridged islands like Oléron and Ré, to be explored just offshore. The coast also boasts excellent golf courses and seaside resorts like La Rochelle, which is best discovered on foot.
Ile de Re / St Martin area
St. Martin is the island capital, and the perfect base from which to explore the island by bike: start your day with a visit to the indoor market to stock up on fresh fruit, cheeses, cold meats and bread before you head off to Ars, the salt marshes of the north and a perhaps a visit to the lighthouse at St. Clement. Watersports (sailing, windsurfing...), horseriding and even golfing are all readily available. You could, of course, simply go for a long stroll along the beach, or enjoy a glass of wine at one of the many cafés around the lively port area.

Getting to the island from the airport: For the time being, there is no direct public transport between La Rochelle Airport and the Ile de Ré. (The only public transport is by bus to La Rochelle town centre, then change and take another bus onto the island). Transport by taxi costs approx. 40 euros and can be arranged for you if required.
