The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
The department of Charente-Maritime is situated on the west coast of France between Nantes and Bordeaux. Beautiful sandy beaches line the coast and the area is famous for its oyster farms and salt flats. The historic port of La Rochelle lies at the centre of the department and is the access point for the Ile de Ré.
The Ile de Ré is a beautiful island just off the coast of La Rochelle which has managed to keep much of its authentic character. It is dotted with nature reserves where multitudes of wild birds and animals live, protected from the advance of technology and mankind. The island is famous for its salt, which is collected by salters towards the western end of the island, its oysters and its potatoes, all of which you can enjoy in the many restaurants scattered throughout the island’s villages.
The waters around the Ile de Ré are loved by all watersports enthusiasts – windsurfers, yachtsmen and all sailors. The Atlantic Ocean is much less dangerous here than in other areas of the mainland coast so bathing is recommended for all.
To make your way around the island, get yourself a bike – it is by far the easiest and healthiest way to travel. There are more than 60 miles of specially adapted cycle paths which link all the main villages and beaches. In addition, the island is exceptionally flat so hard work is kept to a minimum. You can hire bikes, child seats, carriages - you name it, from the multitude of rental shops throughout the island.
Ile de Re area
Rivedoux-Plage is the first village you encounter as you cross the bridge from the continent. Your first impression is of vast sandy beaches lined with pine trees, and whitewashed cottages nestling between the north and south sides of the island. Upon closer acquaintance, you’ll realise that Rivedoux is an authentic Ré village with oyster farms and traditional farmlands, tiny hollyhock-lined passages and village shops. It’s unique position gives it the added benefit of a north-facing port as well as the wide beaches usually associated with the south side of the island.
How to get there
By car La Rochelle is situated half way down the west coast of France, between Bordeaux and Nantes. Since 1988 the Ile de Ré has been connected to La Rochelle by a 3 km long toll bridge (about 16 euros for a round trip in the high season).
By train to La Rochelle (www.sncf.com) Daily trains to Nantes, Bordeaux, and Paris Montparnasse (TGV). Paris-La Rochelle takes a little less than 3 hours. You can then take a bus (Ré bus) from the station of La Rochelle (it goes through all the villages).
By plane to La Rochelle (www.ryanair.com or www.flybe.com) From London Stansted by Ryanair or from Birmingham by Flybe.
Where the bike is king... On the Ile de Ré, it is not necessary to have a car thanks to more than 60 miles of specially created and signposted cycle paths.
